The producers of the show actually own the garage - they bought it to host the program (how else do you think Jock got a new M5? ).
So I guess, "featured" (as in people shown on the program) staff are either short term contracts which are renewed as and when, and brought in by the producers. As I'm sure some of the cars.
Being a mechanic is one thing, but one also has to have characters worthy of maintaining viewers. So underdogs may well be purposely employed in aim to stir things up. And then happily dropped as and when needed. Or they walk on their own accord. Either way, it makes TV
However, our local dealership who will remain nameless, has a higher turn around in staff. Quoting from a freind who moved from an independant garage to work there, being disgusted and outraged when he was exposed to company procedures which are implemented purely to rip off customers (ooo, you'll need pads AND discs, sir ). But that's another story

The garage is a bit of fresh air although it too does have similarites with American Hotrod however the people employed have better personalities, and that dodgy pete customer is off his head. One episode recently said he had branched out into online pharmacuticals!! (probably means he imports steroids from turkey )

I used to but it was more or less the same every episode, having an intern who wasnt up to the job, sacking them, everyone moaning about how far behind they are etc etc etc just got too repetetive for me (think they are all repeats now as well)

As for the "garage"....Just a bunch of monkeys..
Im surprised they get any work at all,the spaniards must be really crap at spannering..
Sandy the 4x4 guy is the only decent mechanic in there, and the reason Jock has no teeth is probably because, they have been kicked in previously by someone who took exeption to his arrogant, foul mouthed demeanour..
If my leg was long enough i would kick his teeth in from here!!

Ad here seems to imply that the mechanics are recruited by endemol, the company who produces the series!

all the hot rod and garage quotes are from the old repeats.the only girl in the garage this year is jocks daughter.the high turn over of staff is probably down to jock and possibly the work is a little more seasonal than the uk.jock owns the garage, possibly discovery channel put in some money for the 2nd unit[top side}why the heck he still employs ricky is beyond me!

It was basicly because, Boyde wanted him to box his frame for safety and bluebear just said no , then said ok , then never done it ,then said il do it, then told mike to drill big holes in it .he was just a total **** over the whole thing, what a fool , it realy was the chance of a lifetime
its being repeated on discovery turbo at the moment

I used to watch American Hotrod, but it's all repeats of the first series now. Are there any new ones being made now?...If I see that Junkyard dog one once more I'll scream - as I missed most of the last series and they keep repaeting the same old episodes over and over, but never seem to show the later ones which I missed. Grrr Supoose I'll just have to find and d/l the torrents instead :rolleyes

i was gonna say,the hotrod shows on tv now are VERY VERY VERY old, charlie has gone, mike has gone, bluebear has gone, the old timer has gone, the black guy has gone, the foreign guy who paints has gone too.
the garageis o.k to watch, but i dont doubt the guys mechanical knowledge, buit for some reason, they all come across ashome diy MECHANICS Llike us from the mistakes they make etc etc
still good to watch
they must like ricky,is his name, the mini me jock lookalaike, 2nd series and still there(well,2nd trip out for the summer for him)

the garage belongs to jock, he started off decades ago working from a van, hence mobile mechanic, and it took off untill he bought the premises you see now. he may have expanded teh garage due to extra money from tv, who knows, but discovery certainly dont own it or hire and fire staff, infact when they first tried to get jock onboard he told them to f off and took them several attempt to convince him of a fly on the wall type one off before it became a reality series. this is all ofcourse true if the interview with jock i read was correct lol

Jock did own the garage but it was bought out by the producers after the first series as they realised it was going to be a hit. Jock still has the say so on hiring and firing, also he probably had a nice wee clause in the deal that means they cant ditch him. He is what makes the programme work anyway.
The turn over in staff is because like jock said, they all go out there thinking cheap booze, nice woman and lots of sun but forget they have to actually work 8am-6pm 5 or 6 days a week.
