Default Notice Period - Advice please

I've got a new job lined up in the New Year, start on 07/01/08.

I am salaried, paid monthly on the 21st of each month.

I have 8 days holiday left to take at work

I intended to hand my notice in tomorrow, which is the 21st, but i have just been thinking would it be better if i worked for a further week, would i get a further weeks wages ?

I am salaried, but not sure when would be the optimum time to hand my notice in, looking to maximise my money, but also to have a decent Christmas break.

Advice greatly appreciated.

Thanks

You still get paid for what you work whether or not it is a full month.

If i was to work the full December, which includes not working 2 days for Xmas, Boxing day, then in effect i am have worked 2 days less, but still get a full months salary - same as every other month.

I just thought i could some how work it so that i get paid for Xmas, Boxing day....if you see what i mean

Why don't you wait to hand in your notice until the 6th December, giving 1 month's notice. Then you get all of the Christmas period paid for plus you could leave 8 days early due to the holiday you have. You would still get paid for the period between the 21st and the 6th.

I'm no expert on employment law, not sure on this one. They may only pay you up to the last day you work. So if you want to be paid for the national holidays you may need to go into work on the 27th or something.

sounds like a plan

They may not let you take the holiday off though? I think in my old contract they could demand you worked the whole of the last month, offering pro rate financial compensation for the extra days. That would mean they may not let you have your xmas holiday.

He needs to check his contract I think Loomy. I'm pretty sure any decent company will allow a compromise to be achieved.

I started work on a Bank Holiday Monday (May 31st) in my present job. I didn't actually go into work until Tuesday 1st June, so I got paid by my new employers for a Bank Holiday before I even did any work.

Just to point out that you don't need to give 30 days notice as such. You can say that you will be finishing on 4th January when you do hand in your notice on the 21st.

That way you get all your Bank Holidays and annual leave with the old employers..
