Car buying scammers..
I currently have my Scooby up for sale on the usual forums, PistonHeads etc.
I have just had an interesting telephone call from an Irish chap that went like this:
Him : Hi is the McRae still for sale?
Me: Yes
Him: What would you take for it?
Me: I presume I could be talked into taking 6k
Him: OK can I have your address for a bankers draft
Me: Erm, so you want the car then?
Him: Yes Ill get someone to pick it up weds
Me: In that case can I have the bankers draft cleared before you send someone?
Him: Will you take cash?
Me: Yes sure it would be better as you hear of dodgy bankers drafts.
Him: OK ill call you back.
That was the whole conversation, no questions about the car at all.
So next I have a text from the gent saying someone will be along Thursday and asking for my address again and if I could hold the car.
I replied someone is looking at it in the morning and I cant guarentee to hold it, i will let him know tomorrow and asked where he saw the car advertised, his reply "Internet."
Now I`m quite open minded about car sales and know there is nothing as queer as folk, but this stinks, I can see three masked men turning up at the door but then again they could turn up at anytime i suppose.
Over cautious or doing the right thing? Im in no rush to sell so...

If it sounds too good to be true, it usually is!
Anyone spending 6k on a car, no matter how long and hard they've looked for that model / year etc, wants a lengthy chat about condition, servicing etc etc.

It is true that there is nothing as queer as folk, but...well. If you were trying to get someone's address to steal a car, why call up and be so dodgy?!
Just pretend to be interested and arrange a time and place. Job done, address found.

Sound well dodgy - 'spcially as I recall hearing about some dodgy irish tw@ who has done this kind of thing before - You end up without a car, without money and usually a few teeth worse off.

99% dodgy.
but worth a quick note, a colleague at work had a similair thing yrs back, with an old sierra.
guy phones up,will you take £650 for it,erm,yeah,colleague goes,i`ll be round in an hour.
sure enough,an hr goes by knock knock knock, i phoned about the sierra,oh yeah,heres your £650,can i have the keys,erm,quick count,heres the keys and off he went.
money was real and all there............................................. ...............................................
2 weeks later coleague gets a knock at the door,do you own a sierra sir,yes i did,well,can you tell me why its in the middle of a bank LOL.
so,sometimes,they do turn up with the money,but the motive of buying the car can still be dodgy ha ha ha
he didnt care,got his money for the car so he was happy.

My sister had this same situation a couple of years ago, except hers was a £250 Astra buried in the front of a Post Office

But back to OP - sounds well dodgy, I would tell him it's gone if he calls back again.

Remember that poor sd in the other thread that lost a foot, watch yourself, six grand Scoobies attract mentalists !
Nobody buys a car without seeing it, use that sixth sense, if it doesnt feel right walk away.
I can tell a real punter from a phone call, they dont always turn up but if I dont like the sound of someone, i.e. I dont want them on my doorstep on any account, I say it is sold.
