When you sign up there is a field on the registration form allowing you to enter the name of an existing user who told you about SN. It does not grant you anything special by default, but admin's could probably pull statistics to see who gets the most referrals, plus you could always write code to do things based on the number of referrals a user has.

The instant ban feature does two things. The first is to ban the user account, the second is to remove all threads/posts made by the user. All done automatically with no need for mods or admins to get involved.
