Any doctors in the house RE: Co-codimol painkillers
Just been prescribed 500mg tablets of co-codimol for lower back pain after doing dead lifts. Now im allergic to absolutely everything and am terribly unsure whether to take these tablets as im in quite abit of pain. Last time i had a relaxant drug (sinus exam) which was suppose to be safe sprayed up my nose i was out for the count for a day and then it took me 3 weeks to recover, felt bloody terrible.
any advice would be great guys or gals

there are 2 versions of cocod 32/500 and 8/500 the 500 is the amount of paracetamol in the tablet the other the amount of codeine in them (in mg) one thing is dont drink alcohol as they will knock you for 6 if your not used to them

NOT a doc. I had these for back pain but I am fairly drug tolerant and had no probs. Pain went in about 4 days so I stopped taking them. As above about alcohol as after I had stopped them there was a fuss about them being life threatening for some people if mixed with a lot of booze. So take that bit seriously. They'll be lots of stuff on the info sheet in the box (the stuff I never read ) dl

I can't do codein or any NSAI's as they inflame my stomach, I have to take tramadol if paracetamol isn't strong enough.
Take something gentle like Lactulose solution to get your bowel moving!
Cheers

Tramadol (INN) (IPA: [ˈtræməˌdɒl]) is an atypical opioid which is a centrally acting analgesic, used for treating moderate to severe pain. It is a synthetic agent, as a 4-phenyl-piperidine analogue of codeine,[1][2] and appears to have actions on the GABAergic, noradrenergic and serotonergic systems. Tramadol was developed by the German pharmaceutical company Grünenthal GmbH and marketed under the trade name Tramal. Grünenthal has also cross licensed the drug to many other pharmaceutical companies that market it under various names.
Tramadol is usually marketed as the hydrochloride salt (tramadol hydrochloride) and is available in both injectable (intravenous and/or intramuscular) and oral preparations. It is also available in conjunction with paracetamol (acetaminophen).
Tramadol is approximately 10% as potent as morphine, when given by the IV/IM route. Oral doses range from 50–400 mg daily, with up to 600 mg daily when given IV/IM. The 'combination' pills each contain 37.5 mg of tramadol and 325 mg of paracetamol, with the recommended dose being one or two pills every four to six hours.
Unlike most other opioids, Tramadol is not considered a controlled substance in many countries (the U.S., Canada and Australia, among others), and is available with a normal prescription. Tramadol is also available over-the-counter without prescription in a few countries.

co-codamol makes me feel sick
I'm on di-hydrocodeine plus diazepam (Valium) for my back at the moment. I only take them when I'm having a bad back episode as they wack me out big time, even more so when combined with Stella (don't combine these drugs with alcohol or you are as stupid as me)

With respect to acupuncture, there is a proven placebo affect (ie one group had the needles injected into 'non' acupuncture points and the other had needles injected into recognised acupuncture points) both groups showed statistically equal results!!..
I was a total sceptic until I had acupuncture myself, it really did work albeit for a day at most when pain would return.

Co-codamol is only a stronger painkiller than normal paracetamol, aspirin etc... - its available from any chemist without prescription so isnt a really dodgy high power drug so isnt anything to worry about.
I take it when I get really bad headaches that normal paracetamol wouldnt touch.
Only real side effect I've heard of is that it can make some people feel sick, which is due to the Codeine in it.
OP - dont worry, it really isnt any different than taking a couple of Anadin or Neurofen etc... its just stronger so works better if you are in pain.
A good non drug cure for muscle pain is microwave hot water bottles - you can get them from Hotties - the home of heat and health ( they do a back wrap sort of thing as well ) - chuck them in the mic for a couple of minutes and they stay hot for around an hour - work very well for strained muscles.

Co Codamol isn't all that strong.
Co-dydramol is a different matter.
I was a complete space cadet when I was on these a while back for a dislocated shoulder. Worked a treat though.

You could always just take a half and see how you are, top it up with a normal paracetamol (remembering you can only have 8 of both in total in24 hours).
You can also get co-codamol in 15/500 strengths as well.
Co-dydramol is also available over the counter is usually thought to be of similar efficacy to co-cod 8/500.
