Default what the hell does ad-hoc mean?

i was reading a post on this forum and it came up and the love of me i havent a clue what it means!

Also more worrying my bosses at work always use it in emails to which i look blankly and pass it on to someone else

i looked it up too but it still doesnt seem to fit into most sentences i've seen it used in, unless people are using it to sound smarter than they are and infact have not clue what it means either

It means a makeshift solution, inadequate planning or improvised events

Ad-hoc...

Used by courier companies for "on demand" bookings.

Means sort of when needed, as required, on demand etc.
