Peak District - things to do?
Hi,
I'm off to the Peak District with the other half and an almost "4 year old" in a couple of weeks.
Anyone got any recommendations for things that shouldn't be missed? We're staying in Castleton for 4 nights and looking for something to keep the little fella happy while still seeing all the nice scenery and villages etc.
Cheers,
Paul.

Ok Castleton is great - try the blue john mines or if you want a boat trip underground, the Speedwell Cavern.
Then maybe a walk up Mam-Tor 'The Shivering Mountain'
I can highly recommend the Peaks Inn for food as well - excellent.

Derwent Water & Ladybower Reservoir - where they tested Barnes Wallace's bouncing bomb of Dambusters fame. There's plenty parking up Derwent Dale and a multitude of footpaths around the reservoirs.
The view from the top of Win Hill along the Hope Valley is pretty amazing although with a 4 year old it might be a bit unrealistic.

There's chuff all to do really, beyond walk and take in the beautiful scenery.
Don't miss: Dovedale; Manifold Valley: Ashford-in-the-Water near Bakewell and Chatsworth House, for starters. The whole of the Derwent valley between Chatsworth House and Whatstandwell is spectacular too (particularly Two Dales), although you dont appreciate it when you grew up there.

great park at buxton,, and the caves at pooles cavern, hayfield is lovely for a day out, feeding the ducks by the church, get the wife to drive back !!! , bakewell is lovely you could even make your way to manchester to see concorde, or watch the banger racing at buxton. a 4 year old would enjoy that.

Your 4 year old would enjoy the childrens play area/farm at Chatsworth House.
Buxton and Bakewell have nice parks too. Also Gullivors Kingdom down in Matlock Bath.

Shaggy is correct Ali, Derwent Water is indeed in the Lake Distict. Derwent Valley Reservoir is a completely different pond

Another vote for Gullivers Kingdom - went there two weeks back - Wife and two nieces in tow (3 & 6) Loved it.
Also, You can hire bikes at Ashbourne for the Tissington Trail - basically very flat... erm apart from the huge dip right after Ashbourne That is a great bike ride - really you only have to get to Tissington and back, but the ride up to the High Peak trail is great
