Question Warrenty or not to be

OK Here is the basic situation without going in to detail for obvious reasons,
Cam belt snapped on car (Not scooby!) causes 1ks worth of damage garage reckons it was the cam belt tensioner,
car covered by second hand warrenty which does cover cam belt failure but not the tensioner.
car has full service history and mileage has not reached cam belt change, the warrenty company is sending someone down to inspect next week.
Questions are then:
Will warrenty man realise what happened?
If yes would they offer anything?
Is it worth me arguing about or try for a compromise?

Garage have said they will try and get them to pay but i suppose they are not too bothered as they will get paid anyway.
Any one have experience of this?

Cheers.

Sounds like my old vectra, turns out the cam belt had been done but the tensioner not replaced. Dodgy garage refused to pay luckily there was no damage to the engine so it only cost me £100
