Wierd way to demolish an office block...
#5
I did wonder what was going on there. Couldn't work out if they were building or demolishing. The fact that the bits at the top had (still have?) lights inside made things a bit confusing.

Looks like someone got the demolition drawings upside down.
The concrete core bears the whole weight of the building. It does actually hang from the top. Must be something to do with undergrond services like the tube or PO tunnels.
Does look bloody strange to drive past, thats for sure!

Heard somewhere it was built like that so they could take it down "easily" - Which makes sense really - Easier to take it down like that rather than blowing it up or trying to get all the rubbish from the top down past all the stuff that's still there.
Having said that I bet all the folk that used to work there that wondered what the big red button that said "release lower floor" are glad they didn't press it !

It does look odd but it makes sense. You can see how each individual floor is built into the concrete structure in the middle.
Therefore working from the ground up allows you to access these supports easily. As long as it is done safely it is fine to do so.
Many buildings are designed this way in cities for this reason. As basically you dont have the room to demolish everything in one big explosion.
Although sometimes after a hard day on the site the though of pressing a big red button to blow the thing into Oblivion seems a very theraputic thought .
