Default HD Upscaling?

New to this so please help!

Explain upscaling to me, in relation to DVD/TVs. I have a 32" HD ready Samsung TV with HDMI ports ready to take an input. I have a Sony DAV-DZ630 Surround sound amp with HDMI output ports and it can upscale my picture apparantly.

Would I get a better picture by upscaling from the DVD?

Cheers, The Hoff

I have that DVD player, and I do not believe it does what you think (it does upscale DVDs obviously!).

I paid £30 for my HDMI cable, and they had Monster ones in there for £100 . I have to say, I have seen stuff through high priced cables and couldn't really see the difference, but avoid dirt cheap ones.

I saw a test in an AV mag a while back on HDMI cable's ranging from 10 pounds to over 100 and there was not really any descernable difference in picture quality. Save your cash

I've a Samsung DVD player with the 'upscale' facility too. Never noticed any difference either.
I bought a lead from Maplins. Currys wanted £70!

Your Sony takes DVDs that (assuming they are UK region 2) have a vertical resolution of 576 lines. It is able to upconvert this to (probably) 720 lines.

Your Samsung almost certainly has a resolution of 768 lines. It will upconvert any input signal to fit its 768 lines anyway, so IMO you might as well let the TV do the job itself in the first place.

The only time it is worthwhile upconverting the signal to your display is if you are certain that the amp will do a better job than the display.

HDMI cables carry a purely digital signal, so it doesn't really matter how much you pay - while some will argue that this signal can be prone to interference from outside agencies, I remain sceptical.

There are some amplifiers out there that act as upscalers too...

the dvd will only upscale your dvds. Although it has got component inputs, I would be highly surprised if it would upscale the input and then output it, so what I mean is I dont think it would upscale your cable tv. Not looked at the specs on the sony, however if it upscales, then connected you cable to that (assuming connection types allow) and connect your tv to the sony. You can connect the dvd to the sony as well and then that way you will only have 1 lead going from the amp to the tv.

Well, I may have misunderstood what you mean, so this is what I thought you meant......

Your upscaling DVD player will upscale your Sky/Freeview whatever if you put the feed though that, then into your HD telly?

If so, then no it won't, but it will upscale your DVDs

Hope that clarifies.

No point in these 'upscalers' because every HDtv on the market has a upscaler built in.
I use a rather good old dvd player with component out and the picture is amazing.

So to answer the question, no.
