PS3 DVD > HD upscaling
I tried this for the first time last night with an amazing film called pans labyrinth by Guillermo del Toro.
It's the first time I have experienced any kind of DVD upscaling, so I cannot comment on how the PS3 compares to other solutions, however what I can say is that I was quite literally blown away with the quality. I eventually annoyed my other half because she was totally into the film, and all I kept saying was 'look at the quality!'
For all those saying DVD is dead, get an upscaler! If somebody had done a blind test with me, I would have believed them it was blu ray native.
One other comment, the sound processor in the PS3 is also fantastic, I am running it through my Sony 5.1 off-the-shelf-package jobbie, and the difference in playing a DVD back through the PS3 DVD player into the system with an optical cable versus just playing it directly from the Sony system is amazing.
(cue countless anti-Sony comments )

She had no choice, I pointed it out to her every five minutes
In all seriousness though, yeah she did
She thought it [girly tech mode on] looked very nice [/]

Good to hear that the PS3 is finally doing a good job of upscaling the video though.

yes, I have Casino Royale and hellboy.
Again, I have not experienced it on any other system, but all I can say is I don't need it to be any better! I cannot see how on a 46inch screen the picture could be any better defined. My Philips LCD does a great job with blacks, and Hellboy worked fantastically in some of the darker screens with his very visibly textured red skin showing up both the resolution capabilities and blending of contrasts and brightness right across the range.
One thing I did notice with Casino Royale, and which the other half also commented on without prompting, is that because the picture is so amazing, it has the strange knock-on effect of making you feel like you are watching constant set pieces. It really highlights the production style of the film, and unfortunately makes you remember you are watching a film rather than experiencing a story. I'm not doing a very good job of explaining the phenomenon, but on casino royale it was noticeable.

Yeah i know what you mean, i've heard cgi, especially explosions etc tend to stand out more due to the high def, altho fortuanetly i've only currently watched a few hd-dvds and they've all been excellent.

Wow! Yeah it was fantastic, I was expecting it to be fantasy the whole way so I was pleasantly surprised at the balance. The FX were also amazing, and I'm shocked it was only a 15, some brutal violence in there!!! The nose smashing scene
