Question

OK - digital camera in the bag but still a few quid to spend.

CD writer looks like a possible next purchase. Anyone any recommendations or thoughts as to what I ought to be looking for?

Would try a decent local computer shop but the nearest computer shop is PC World

Hugh

Exclamation

Burn Proof is when it can't be incinerated no matter how hard you flame it

I go with the Plextor aswell, damn fast and reliable.

Burn Proof means..Buffer Under RuN error Proof, a name Sanyo came up with, it reduces errors when writing to cdr.

Learn something every day on here don't ya

OK,

here is the lowdown,

if money no object reliability of plextor is second to none

great value liteon (make sure model number ends in B)

what do you want to do with the burner, do you need to use clonecd

i have used Sony,Plextor,Liteon,Ricoh

as for the latest speed burners i never burn above 8 speed

Don't touch PC World. Scan do daily offers (or will after XMas) and you can get a mail order from them. They often do bundles.
http://www.storagereview.com do reviews of burners so you can compare.
Plextor fan here, but I am in the land of SCSI.
Burn Proof refers to the ability of the drive to create a proper disk when the write buffer is empty (i.e. the computer supplies data to the CD writer slower than the writer is writing it). In days of old, it would create an unusable disk but is now not a problem if you have Burn Proof.

this buffer i think is the harddisk. More space better results. I used to have a 4speed & when the harddisk started whirring while i was creating a cd, it was at that point that the cd then became a coaster

Cool

I've got a TEAC CD-W512EB (burnproof) great drive, rated as good as all the others when purchased but a lot cheaper, i'd suggest looking at the newer one of these....

The TDK Cyclone 24x10x40 is PC Pro's current A-List CD-R drive. Only thing it hasn't been is the Plextor 24x10x40 as they haven't tested it yet.

Still, I'm more than happy with mine. Has come down in price since that review as well Try http://www.dabs.com

There are two type of writter around at the moment. Those that can copy disks not designed to be copied and those that can not.

Check out cd clone and blindwrite we sites for list of recorders that can copy anything. Models to go for are Aces (cheap) or Plextor 24x40x10 (best!).

Hi,

Just purchased a liteon LTR-16102B 16X10X40X from buy.com

If you use the following link, you will get a voucher for 20 quid off when you spend 40 quid or more.

http://www.gb.buy.com/promo/Coupon.a...C453622325CB5D

The drive is listed as 74.98, so with the voucher you will get it for 54.98 included vat and next day delivery.

I challenge anyone to beat this price

Also, burn proof means that, unlike the days of old, an interruption to the stream of data to the cd writer will not result in a 'coaster'. To test this, I burnt 600 Mb of digital camera photos onto a cd whilst downloading a huge file from the net, copy a large group of files from my other cd drive to my hard disk and surfing the net.

Result - a perfect CD with no errors in just 4 minutes

Go one, you know you want to

Edited to say that the voucher expires at midnight on the 15th of January

Andrew.

Sorry it's Plextor every time. I have now had about 4 burners fail on me in <3 years (Ricoh, HP, 2xYamaha). Happy man with a Plextor after many recommendations of longevity from friends and colleagues.
