Fish Tank advice on filtration
On the other fish threads I have mentioned that my Dad has a good size tank that he really used to look after with a good selection of Marines that eventually all died (old age etc) and after a year or so of being empty (too big to move etc) he decided to give it another go with Tropical, and has had it running for a number of years, but sadly with not even half the motivation or inspiraton he had when keeping Marines
Recently my folks were away for the weekend, and the thermostast broke in one of his heaters and subsequently boiled his fish, so now he has given up completly and asked me do I want his Tank and setup etc
Now for many many years, including the Marine stage the filtration he used was a pair of Fluval 4's located at either end but converted to reverse flow into an undergravel system, and also an external filter too, and a powerhead and filter to provide current
The Tank is 5' (L) x 18" (H) x 18" (D) at least I think it is 18 x 18, it is definately 5' though
Also there are two heaters (well one is broke now, so only one) he still has the protein skimmer and all of his old Marine stuff including the Coral he had in there
I currently have this tank
with the following fish
12" Black Ghost Knife Fish
Common Plec
Golden Nugget PLec
Torpedo
Clown Loach
Polka Dot loach
Khuli Loaches (I think they are still in there)
large Synodontis
Which I would probably move into the back living room, and locate my Dad's old tank where the Jewel one currently is (I know a major move) but the 5' tank is just the right size to fit in the space occupied by the Jewel 180, and put the fish into the 5' tank (I do have another two smaller tanks, and a third that is still empty brand new never been used)
My Jewel currently has a Fluval 2, a Fluval 4 and the built in Jewel filtration system
I dont know whether to keep the filtration on my Dad's tank as it is
is there any benefit these days of having undergravel filters with reverse flow from the Fluvals
Steve

Its ok, I have never ran a Marine tank either
My Dad used to with the setup above, I have been running Tropical for many years, but never looked into the different filtration options other than advice from my Dad as he has ran tanks for most of his life
