Question

My nipper had one of those tall water filled tubes with fish swimming around in them for Xmas. Says in instructions to only fill with distilled water. As I need 9litres of the stuff anyone know where I can get it, how much it is, or better still can I fill it with tap water and chuck in some of that fishsafe stuff that people use with tropical fish.

Chip.

fill her with tap water and when kiddie is bored with it in 2 months you can drain it and shove it in the loft

What's the tap water in Cardiff like? If it's fairly soft you be able to use it as is - if it's full of nasty lime then probably best not to as the limescale may gum up the pump thingy.

Back in the days when car batteries needed topping up, car accessory shops used to sell distilled water - can't say I've noticed whether they still do or not!

Can't you just boil it?

Rainwater collected in a plastic container should do the trick. Failing that, I would have thought a chemists would sell it.

Local school chemistry department may have a water distiller and could help you out (I know mine did many years ago )

Think a brita water filter (and some patience) may do the trick though

Distilled water is probably specified as tap water contains chlorine, which can affect fish if too strong.
Either use rainwater or boiled water which has been COOLED - very important that last bit!!

To be pedantic, boiled tap water is very different from Distilled water.

Boiling will kill germs but only cencentrate other impurities Given that its artificail fish I think its jut limescale they want to avoid though

Boiled water is NOT distilled water.

If you are too tight to fork out £7.00 , dehumidifiers collect the condensed water they suck up....this is distilled water.
