Avi,

You might want to consider the all in one solution as you might
get a better overall system. Just put together my own system which
cost a bit more. With Interconnects costing a few pounds under
£100 and good speaker cable costing > £100 as you have 5 speakers
to wire. All in one system gives you a good compromise. One thing
I would invest in is a good scart cable £40-50 as this gives a
significant improvenment in picture quality. Also pay carefull
attention to seting up the room as this will also have a dramatic
effect.

Be carefull though, next thing you will want is a nice 36" TV

Try
http://www.techtronics.com/uk/shop/50-sony-dav-s500-multi-region-dvd-player.html

or the pionner HC-50S which includes the smae DVD player and
speakers but with the matching Pionner AMP.

PLEASE don't forget about the cables in your budget. Once I was in full swing & ordering custom made scart > rgb cables & 4 core speaker cable for the fronts ( biwired ) & mid range interconnects it came out at a smidge over 300 notes just for them .. oops ...

QED Silver Anniversary for the center and rears was the best price/performance combi I found.

Don't skimp though .. be a shame to spoil it for the sake of a few quid.

Then take it all home, set it up and audition :-) Matrix ( lobby scene ) and Saving Private Ryan ( the chapter where they hit the beach ) are personal faves :-)

I won't forget the cables.. I can fully appreciate the difference these can make having heard a mates system aftre he spent £200 on cable.

Basically I'm after the DVD/AMP/Speakers for £500 ish excluding cables.. so if anyone has any suggestions , feel free to contribute

Cheers

I can't get under your £500 limit , but I'll have a go at getting close enough so you can lie to the missus :-)

Mission M72 (2x), M7c1 (x1), M7ds (x2) - £330 from techtronics.com

Pioneer DV343 - £142 from empiredirect.co.uk ( or the silver DV340 , same price )

Sony STRDE475 (Silver) £173 from Richersounds

richersounds will match/beat any web prices, so it's worth looking around and then going to see them - you should get enough off for some interconnects or cables, anyway.

Enjoy....

If you register on www.thedvdforums.com and then check the 'bargains forum', you're eligible to buy the Pioneer DV-444 in black for £190 delivered from Upgrade Heaven. You have to order through the link on the thread (http://thedvdforums.com/forums/showt...threadid=33495).

I bought one for my parents for Xmas - it's a good machine, fully multi-region (inc. RCE compatibility). The silver version is £20 extra.

Andy.

Bit late now as you have just ordered But for anyone else out there - do have a listen to some of the all-in-one packages that now on offer. I bought the Sony DAV S300 about 6 months ago - fantastic starter system for around £400 - so good that when I showed it to Sal's Dad, he was so impressed that he bought it off me.

I've now upgraded to the Sony DAV S800 - this is a serious piece of kit, the sound is amazing, whether playing back DVD, CD or the new SACD format, Seriously impressive and very hard to beat in the sub-£1000 category - picture quality on the DVD is stunning.

Good point about the cables though - don't skimp. I spent a large amount on the cables for my HiFi and I'll probably be using the QED silver to rewire the Sony at some point.
