OK.. this is going to be hard to describe..

But for TEN YEARS, i've been wondering what a specifc sort of road sign is for, and have asked just about everyone I know. Most people have never remembered seeing one, and the ones that do have no idea what they are.

I've just driven past another one, and had the brain wave to ask the scoobynet community!

OK.. these signs are very roughly the size of a A4 peice of paper, held portrate.

They are white, on a pole probably 6ft high, and the only markings on them are many horizontal silver / reflective looking stripes. Almost like a bar code.

Now. The only guess I've had is that it forms a part of some kind of antiquated tracking system for police, ambulances, and the like?

So.. over to you lot!

Something to do with buses. The buses have a reader behind a dark panel above the front door and as they pass these signs, which are the bus equivalent of a bar code, it monitors progress and ...... does or used to do something. Not sure exactly what, some thoughts: changes fares in the ticket machine, updates the sign on the front, feeds back progress to bus HQ, whatever.

I've often seen these too and often wondered what they were for. Until something a bit more important cropped up like what was for tea or on the TV than evening

No idea! Used to live in London where there's more buses and our Dad's a bit of a bus and train anorak so I guess he told me years ago.
