Speed boats
Anyone here got one?
Realised that our little sailing boat, although very pretty, is a bit well, slow so think we might get a little power boat - enough to ski/wakeboard behind but nothing too OTT.
Got a pontoon mooring for anything up to 18ft.
Thinking Boston Whaler with a 90 (probably 17ft Montawk) as the one's father in law has had have been nuclear bomb proof.
Anyone got/getting one?
No emissions laws on having fun at sea - yet!

Expect to spank a gallon or more an hour skiing with a 70-90hp
do not forget to factor in insurance for the boat and third parties and one service a year.
Not too sure if you need a RYI powerboat licence although a good idea to do it anyway.
Best to buy a boat used inshore/on freshwater as the salt eats away and the engine and leccy bits. The engines do have sacrifical annodes which help.
Likely to be a 2 stroke so noisey and smelly and not welcome on some lakes or rivers!
Great fun, ran a 16'5" Fletcher GTO with a 90 Yammy (jointly) with a mate for 4 years can compare it to standing in the shower and burning £ 20's cost wise.
If it has a trailor check it thoroughly (wheels, bearings, joints, welds fittings) as if fcuked could cost the best part of a grand to replace with a decent one

Cheers Paul.
Wife's grandad (!) has one and it's pretty good and although not very sleek looking, it's super tough.
Wife was a waterski instructor so pretty competent driving wise. Might get a ski in this weekend in fact!

Used to go out with a friend in a 16" Bayliner, great fun Skiing/wakebording.
Last one we had was from Cumbria as they were imposing a speed restriction on Lake Windermere and lots of people were sellimg fast boats off cheap.
Try (fl)ebay as lots on there.

Great fun and expensive for a while, then gets boring and expensive. Then it gets less expensive when you park the boat up and can't be bothered taking it out. TBTH I think Paul Habgood told me this would happen, but it was worth it for the great fun bit

As Paul as already mentioned they can become expensive toys.
I ran a brand new 17ft Fletcher with a 115 HP Mercury engine for 2 years with a mate, we got the package for a steal as the guy who bought it went bankcrupt so the dealership wanted shut ASAP for cash.
It wasnt bad with 2 of us running it but we then progressed onto a Mastercraft Ski boat as we where mad on wakebaording Para sailing and we had one of them air chair ski's which where so much fun.
Now the Mastercraft was heavy on the juice probably £70 a day in fuel alone, serviced twice a year at £350 a time , insurance shall i continue.
We did carry a 3ft concrete kerb stone in the rear to weight it down though to give us more wake, LOL.
A guy i know runs a 40ft ish Sunseeker with twin inboards now that is truly inbelievable cost wise to keep afloat. He bought it after his January city bonus came through not really knowing the ongoing costs associated, he has kept it but decided to forget the new Murcielago and settle for a new Porsche Turbo instead (Life must be hard)

This wouldn't just be for blatting about - we live on the bank of a wide river that leads to the Fal (nr Truro/Falmouth) so plenty of exploring to do and beaches to land on.
Just takes forever in our current boat and we hardly ever use the sails due to the flukey nature of the wind around estuaries.
Inlaws just sold a Botnia Targa 35 with two 330bhp engines. Rather a thirsty beast that was and about a £1k per fill up!

People argue that you can always use the sea. Well yes, but get into trouble on Winderemere and your never far from safety or help. Get into trouble in the North Sea and your really in trouble.

Stilover - Well we've got a river here with an 8 knot limit but in 15 mins you are out to a wide estuary and no speed limits but land on both sides in case help is needed!
In fact it's here (more or less)

Also have the Camel Estuary to play on on the North Coast of Cornwall - similar set up but usually busier.

Have a mate who's doing up an 18ft power boat (not sure what sort - he repairs boats for a living) with a 3.4 litre 260bhp outboard - hadn't even realised outboards got that powerful - once finished, he reckons 70-80mph should be achievable - think I might just watch from the shore!
LOTR - So you viewed a post I put up about boats to which you have no interest.
You then tried to use the link that I put up.
Now I have actually had one or two "offers" that I have politely but firmly rejected from the odd saddle sniffer and sadly it's the same for you.
I'm straight, married and about to have a kid - I'm not interested in your batty boy love games.

Apologies to anyone else reading this.
I have a bogey on my six and I believe he is a tail gunner.
I'm trying to shake him off but he keeps coming back for more.
And more. And more.
Can someone please ban him.
Again.

My old man used to race this boat (21ft Ring), bit of a handful to drive but with the pair of 225hp Yamaha's it would do about 95mph and burn about 60 Gallons per hour and i used to hang on to a bit of rope behind it

I have got an elderly Shetland 570 which is a very strong boat and such a good hull design that it is still used today. It will ride the waves pretty well for a smallish boat and I use it for fishing around the coast. It has a cabin of course which is useful at times and with a suitable engine would be ok for water ski-ing too. I have got a 70hp 4 stroke and it will do 21 knots. There must be a few of those around for a reasonable price. (18' 8")

I was in a similar position as yourself here. I had a Heron double mast sailing boat, and decided it was too slow and got a 16Ft, 100Bhp on the back, fletcher speed boat.
Wow, althought faster, the damn thing used to drink fuel, like a Scotish bloke drinks cider on a Friday night. Also, the number of bearings the trailer used to go through. Advisable to get insurance and make sure the boat you get is fully serviced, as that was a £££ aswell.
Although fun, nippling along the south coast was cool, the romantic beliefs soon disappeared. Hitting water at over 30mph, hurts ! And no, I didnt feel like Corcket / Tubbs from Miami Vice :-), and I soon became skint due to fuel costs, insurance, servicing, moorings, etc.
So, from now on, its far easier being a mate of a person with a boat ! :-)
Best of luck.

sbk - all good points and we do very much like our current boat (17ft Cornish Crabber "Coble" - very pretty little boat and easy to use) which seems to get approached all the time with nice comments (not unlike having a new Audi TT which gets no comments or a mint Escort mk1 which gets loads of comments despite being a lot slower!).
We do have access/free use of a Boston Whaler Montawk 170 with a 90 at any time but a short drive away (40 mins) and may be able to persuade the owner (wife's grandad) to "leave it" on our mooring for a little while!
Previous experiences of the brand are a 22ft Outrage with two 115 engines (very fast but not the best for skiing) and a seriously fun Sport 15ft with a 60 - dinky boat but SO user friendly and powerful enough for anyone under about 13st to mono behind.
A tricky one - new 17ft Montawk with a 100 is £21k (with a few extras), 15ft Sport with a 60 (and some extras) is £15k - very few available 2nd hand and most are way overpriced.

Oh, and the banks aren't strewn with as much litter as they were.
