Climate Change, are we being conned?
Has anyone heard of Cool Earth?
Cool Earth Action - Keeping carbon where it belongs - Home
It's basically an organisation that will reserve an area of rainforest for protection for you. So for £75, you can ensure that an acre of rainforest isn't destroyed.
I've been doing a little bit of research and it seems that by stopping an acre of rainforest being destroyed you save about 260 tonnes of carbon per year being emitted.
By driving your average Subaru Impreza around for a year you produce about 5.5 tonnes of carbon per year.
So finally, my question is, why is the average motorist being so heavily penalised for such a small amount of carbon emission, when it is relatively cheap to ensure a much bigger carbon saving?
Paul.

Well I agree that that is debatable.
But if we assume for the moment that carbon is responsible for global warming, my question is, why the massive tax for such a small amount of carbon, when it's relatively cheap to save a massive amount of carbon.

Trouble is, too much rainforest is being chopped down at the moment so that people can make a living and they accurately quote our own destruction of the forests for our own financial gain.
Very difficult problem

is global warming real? yes
are humans to blame? um it happened many times before humans evolved so other than perhaps slightly pseeding it up then no.
will an iceage follow a warmer spell? yes
does this happen often? yes about every 10k years
are we due for another one? we were to 2000 years ago
so in short, even if we are helping it'll happen anyway.
and before anyone says yeah righto, this was part of the report my sister did to achieve her PHD

Rules of thumb that have worked for me quite well over the years:
a) Be suspicious of anything that a government enthuses about
b) Be even more suspicious of said topic, when businesses latch on to the idea and start using it as a marketing tool
Now apply to the topic in question....

We need to chop down the rain forests to make way for growing biofuel crops to feed our cars and make them green and thus reduce our "carbon footprint"

..and eco-vegan hippies need to cut down rainforest in order to feed their ever increasing want of soya produce so that poor fluffy animals arn't eaten, allowing them the energy to campaign about us driving cars!

I've said on many previous topics on the subject of global warming."Yes global warming is real, however we are NOT to blame".
It's due to orbital variation cycles (Milankovitch theory), and solar activity.
So there is absolutely nothing we can do to stop it since it's completely natural.
I believe there is global conspiracy to raise new (or higher) taxes to line the pockets of the worlds greedy governments. It seems to be the fashionable thing to "do our bit to prevent global warming". The masses are easily brainwashed into believing anything they hear if its told often enough.
It puts me in mind of people believing the world was flat before 1492. All the top scientists of the time said so, so it must have been true.

Yes we are being conned, it's just another excuse to raise revenue to give to the poor families in the UK (you know, the ones with no jobs yet have plenty of money for Plasma's and stuff...).
However, I do believe we need to look at alternative ways to power our homes and fuel our cars, but more for technological reasons and to have an alternative to oil, rather than climate change reasons.
Climate change is happening and there is nothing we can do about it yet the 3rd world countries all seemingly seem to blame the western worlds to why there poor countries are flooding when sea levels rise etc... our media has poluted their minds!
