Over £600 ebay purchase Question . . .
Hi all
Won an item on ebay (£600+) and in the auction listing, PayPal is listed as a payment option.
So after the auction I tell the seller that I'll be making payment in full the next day through PayPal and can we arrange a day for me to pick it up (its listed as pick up only no posting)
Had an email back saying the item was/is his mates and can I pay cash on collection to save PayPal fees and so his mate gets the cash quicker.
Well I've emailed him back saying I will be paying with my company credit card through PayPal and that I'm not able to pay cash on collection (No mention of wanting cashs in the listing) I've even offered to pay an extra £20 for his PayPal fees.
It will be a 200 mile round trip to collect the item and I'm not happy about handing over 600 quid cash - partly because of the security aspect.
Not heard back from him yet, but do you think I'm being unreasonable?

hmmm, personally apart from the issue of having £600 cash on you I think what has been suggested is the safest option.
You get to see the goods before you pay, then only if you are happy do you actually pay your money. Ask for him to write you a receipt, and you should be covered.
I would want to take someone with you, and maybe even not have the cash with you. Look at the area and the people first, then go to a cash point if you want to pay.
Paypal has all the negative aspects that a third party is going to hold your money. There are so many scams and horror stories that I do just not trust them.

No I would do the same. is stick with paypal or credit card then he transactions traceable. if you have covered his ebay fees whats his problem? None if its all legit. stick to your gut feeling.

Depends how big you and your mate is .... cash is fine (but I would hide it in the car or something).
If it cuts up rough either put them in hospital or tell them that you have no money with you but could get it if all went well.

Thanks for the replies.
Its in Liverpool and not wanting to be rude, there are some dodgy scouse scallys about - I know, I've met some of them!
I'll tell him its PayPal or nothing.
Just didn't want to lose my 100% feedback as I sell a few things now and again.

I sold something recently for a large sum of money via ebay, it was basically sold outside of ebay, and the guy came to the house with the cash, and we did a deal there and then, no paypal or ebay fees
I have since been to his house to set everything up for him too
It was a mixing desk, and he needed help setting it all up, plus he was quite local

Ive met people on ebay for things worth £1000s with no hassles.
I also do not accept paypal for anything over a couple of hundred £, because of the risks of a chargeback and the insane fees.
I do however state that it will be cheque or cash only in those listings.
I think his suggestion is fine- look at his feedback and make up your own mind as to his trustworthiness

Part of my reason for bidding on this auction was that he was accepting payment by PayPal.
If he had put "Cash On Collection Only" then I would NOT have placed a bid.
Paying with a credit card is easier for me, and if anything goes wrong I have some sort of comeback via the CC company.

I've sold quite a few things on ebay recently for a couple of hundred and met one bloke gave him the item and he gave me £500 simple but it was in a public place i wouldnt be doing it in someones house or a quiet area. Im only 20 miles from liverpool so why not suggest a well known public place in liverpool where you know it will be safe
or if you cant be bothered to do that just pay with the credit card
