Question (TV) home insurance question - *UPDATE* Engineer called round today

Hi there,
Decorating and decided to move our TV.

Dropped it and not it does not work!

Called the insurance and they are going to replace it new for old - good jobe we got good insurance then

We have (had) a 28" CRT widescreen Sony. Top of the range (with surround sound) when we got it some 8 years ago.

can you still buy new CRT sonys, in fact any makes 28" or above new?

At a quick glance, there's not many about - JVC still make them in 28" and 32" by the looks of it

Paul, I think that you may struggle to get a quality brand CRT television now. Most insurers have a Sony = Sony replacement policy (Zurich certainly do), so you may find yourself with an LCD replacement.

Ive got a brilliant one (thanks Zurich!), there are less impressive ones though. If your insurers, or a company to whom they give a delegated authority, arent offering an acceptable replacement then you do not have to capitulate. Zurich used Empire Direct and I was happy enough with them, but they also had a Sony = Sony policy. Larger callcentre-based firms like DGIS (Dixons) may try to move you into the easiest 28" CRT, calling it a 'like for like' replacement, but you neednt accept it, irrespective of what they suggest.

As above it should be the "nearest current equivalent" as a replacement.

They'll probably be fairly pragmatic about it - wait to see what they offer you. Also, they may allow you to upgrade to better telly by paying the difference.

my mums getting a new tv on the insurance, she has a new for old thing, but theyve told her because of the big change in tv's now they are going to give her what she paid for the old one and let her get her own.

saturday

Engineer has called, TV kaputt, needs new case, stand, tube and boards so looks like a write-off.

We have been put in touch with a company called Powerplay (who deal with electricals for the ins. co.) anyone got any experience of Powerplay?

We have looked around and it looks like plenty of LCD's about for £950.00, any reccommendations, do not want bigger than 32inch

LCD or Plasma, can we afford a plasma with this budget???

Bit pissed off, our Sony CRT (at 10 y/o) was still a brilliant picture (up until the accident).
