Default Driving up to York - M1 or A1?

I'm going up to York tomorrow morning from Melton Mowbray area. The three different route planners I've tried have given me three different recommended options.

Is the better route via the M1 > M18 > A1M or straight up the A1 > A1M? I think the M1 way is longer, but is it quicker?

Cheers

From Melton get to Grantham and get on the A1... 1 straight road whereas you'll have to go further travelling to Leicester to get to the M1 and you'll be further away.

Plus Id say travelling up the A1 will let you travel that bit quicker Definately NOT quicker to go towards the M1.

p.s. say hi when you pop through Grantham lol

M1 M18 A1 is shorter and misses out Sheffield. A1 can get packed with lorries during the week, but more of it is 3 lane now, and should be ok on Saturday. Traffic into town will be murder though

Slowest part of the journey would be the A607 towards Grantham but with a decent car there are plenty of overtaking places and you should be there in 15minutes no trouble.

And obviously getting into York wont be easy.

2 hours and 10 minutes on a good run to York from Grantham mate. Saturday I would suggest 2 and a half hours at that sort of time. Shouldnt have too much trouble setting off just before 8....

Safe Journey

Its like any other city, its a gamble timewise. Just allow plenty of time in case.

Safe Journey

Getting into York is only really a problem from the West at weekday rush hour or during the big race days.

Other than that I never have a problem.

From the city boundary to the centre on a Saturday morning at 930am will take ten to fifteen minutes.

Quite a few roadworks on the A1 south of Doncaster at the moment though.

Why not detour on the way home and see the Humber Bridge?

Chaps,

Just to let you know my trip up the A1/A1(M) went OK. I don't think I set off any speed cameras, though I did have a moment when I noticed a police car behind me while I was doing about 85. Pulled into lane 1, settled the speed down abit (police car doing the same), over took another car which was doing just under 70 and tried to make sure I was behaving sensibly. Police car pulled of at the next roundabout which let me get back up to cruising speed. I wasn't in a Scooby (sold it last year) so not sure if that made a difference.

Had a most enjoyable day in York and the return journey was equally uneventful...

Exactly my point, from Melton if he wanted to take the M1 where would he go unless he took the real sh!tty road to Nottingham and hit loads of traffic on the way.

A6006, Melton to Kegworth, via Wymeswold and Rempston. Plenty of overtaking and some nice twisties as well.
