Default SUV hire in US - San Fran to Vegas

Hello

Some mates of mine are going to the US soon on a lads holiday. They want to drive from San Francisco to Vegas, and asked me if I knew any details about hiring a big SUV to drive from one to the other.

They want something with Satnav, that can fit 4 blokes in.

Has anyone got any ideas or recommendations of companies that do this and what to ask for/consider ?

Dave

I am doing something similar - only pickup is Phoenix and drop off is Denver.

We are renting from Alamo and its a Chevy Trailblazer. Rented one before in Montana and found it big enough.

Have a look at Holiday Autos. They are part of lastminute.com and appear to act as car rental brokers rather than actually renting the car themselves.

I recently did Chicago to New Orleans and renting with Alamo through Holiday Autos was cheaper than going direct to Alamo (who were one of the cheapest, anyway).

Remember that there will be a one-way hire charge when dropping the car off at somewhere other than the pickup point.

Why have a SUV when you can rent this from most major Hertz locations

I used Holiday Autos for both of my trips to the US. The second trip we did a similar route to you, except we went from SF to Big Bear Mountain (to Ski) and then on to Vegas for a day or so, before back to SF via 5 days in LA.

The SUV we got was I think some kind of Dodge.... it was Ok roomy big boot etc. Didn't have Sat Nav (it was an extra option) but used my PDA and some software (£60), which was ok. Its very easy to drive in the US - lost of v. long roads with only a couple of junctions from SF to LV! I think it cost us around £300 for 10 days hire.

Have fun you'll have a great time - LV is not my kind of place, but an experience none the less!

I did San Fran to Vegas a few years back, we went through to South Lake Tahoe and Death Valley, Yosemite was closed for the winter

We picked up a hire car from the airport, was a good price too, cant remember the specifics, but we did have a great time

That looks like great fun, I was very disappointed to see that it's still got a turdomatic gearbox What is it with the american obsession of driving using one hand?

I had a Mustang convertible in San Francisco last summer, great fun but I couldn't get on with that crappy gearbox, it was constantly in the wrong gear on twisty roads. 6-speed manual would've been way more fun, but of course you can't hire a manual for love nor money in the US!
