Default Restless legs

anybody here get restless legs?. I seem to get it in the nights just before bed and early morning, Its a kinda dull aching sensation and makes me stretch like mad. Ive read it maybe a vitamin deficiency so am off to the health shop to get Iron and B12 tablets. Ive usually got a pretty good diet so any help or info would be helpful.

I used to get this, then I stopped smoking 2+ years ago. Never get it now, so there is definitely a link there.

Show her the attachment. It states a Hot milky drink at bedtime can help.

If i dont have a pair of socks half rolled down my feet i cant sleep at night. They are rolled down to put pressure on the instep. I've done this for over 20 years.

I used to get it constantly and still occasionally get it. I'm at Med school and yup, Docs aren't too sure what causes it. It's thought to be related to chemical changes in your bloodstream and circulation. It is sometimes caused by certain medications, such as anti-histamines, i.e. Nytol, hay-fever tablets, etc, and certain anti-depressants. Avoid caffeine. You could also try herbal tablets - Skullcap, Cramp Bark, Chamomile, or Valerian, although Valerian is widely thought to be the best herbal remedy for this, and it also help you sleep. Valerian would be my choice.
When I was younger I smoked dope twice, and both times, while trying to sleep, I got the worst restless legs that I'd ever had. I was in tears by the end. So, I think there's also a relation there.
Restless legs usually only affects the elderly but more and more young people are getting it. Quinine tablets, used for treating malaria, can help. These helped in my case. Ask your GP for a script. And as Mart360 stated, zinc is a proven remedy, so you should try that. Also, getting someone to roughly massage your legs is a good temporary relief. Av
And finally, this is a traditional treatment for RL. I tried it a few times and it does work to some extent, but it's a bit of hassle, although when your in that state, you'd do anything to make it stop. Get a basin of freezing cold water, and another basin of the hottest water you could bear, and plunge your feet into the hot water, keep them in for 2 mins, or as long as you can stand, and then remove and plunge them into the cold water basin instead for the same length of time. Do this repeatedly for about 20 mins and sit down while doing it. It boosts your circulation, and although unpleasent, is a great help.
Sorry this post is so long, but I know how awful it is and wanted to tell you everything I know about it. Hope some of these help, Lisa

I have to take Citrozine Hydrocloride (spell check) every single day, or I'm sneezing and blowing my nose all day.
I suffer RL most days (terrible last night couldn't get to sleep till after 2:30am) and I think you've just hit the nail on the head as to why I probably get RL syndrome.

Cheers Lisa.

Not that it really matters as I'd rather have RL most day's than sneeze all day.

I get it every night - and pretty much always only in my left leg.

Ages ago I read that Chelated Iron tablets were the best thing to get - so each evening, just as I feel it setting in, I take one and after about 10 mins it's lots better. (only cost about £6 for 100)

Like a lot of other posters, I eat a really healthy diet and walk briskly for a bare minimum of 1 hour every day. I've not spotted any correlation to anything diet related at all - I've had it years, believe me I've tried to find the cause!

My advice? Try everything that's recommended and see what works for you - it's a nightmare thing to have!

Thumbs up

well very excellent advice from peeps so far and i will defo try some of the proposed things. Cant believe how many people are getting here tbh..

I read a few weeks ago that studies have soon that our iron levels drop upto 50% in the late evening and during the night which could be one of the main problems here affecting the carrying of oxygenated blood round the body.. makes sense though..

The only two treatments licensed for restless leg syndrome are pramipexole (mirapexin) and ropinirole (adartrel). Both are dopamine receptor agonists which are also used in higher doses in the management of Parkinsonism. Mirapexin in particular is being heavily marketed for the treatment of restless leg syndrome.- I personally haven't prescribed this as of yet, but it is worth bearing in mind if you have tried simple measures. (Obviously these are prescription only medications)

Not Chelated Iron - what am I thinking? Blackstrap Molasses Iron tablets - that's what I take. Sorry - busy day, not thinking straight!

Now this is good reading..

Here is some basic research conclusion i found on it..

Pramipexole had major effects on RLS symptoms without severe side-effects. The present study aimed to assess the long-term efficacy of pramipexole. Seven patients were treated with the drug for a mean follow-up duration of 7.8 months. Treatment was started at a dosage of 0.25 mg, and progressively increased until the optimal therapeutic effect was obtained. Home questionnaires were completed for 7 consecutive days, after one month and after a mean of 7.8 months of treatment with pramipexole, assessing leg restlessness during the daytime, in the evening, at bedtime and during the night. There was no evidence of a decrease in the therapeutic effect of pramipexole in these patients, even 7.8 months after the initiation of treatment. The optimal dosage was 0.25 mg for one patient, 0.5 mg for five patients and 0.75 mg for one patient. While there was a progressive increase in severity of leg restlessness from daytime to nighttime before treatment, a suppression of leg restlessness was observed throughout the 24 h with a single dose of pramipexole at bedtime. The remarkable efficacy of pramipexole raises the possibility that the D3 receptors of the mesolimbic system may be more specifically involved in the physiopathology of RLS.
