I'd say at least 10 years for a quality (ie Japanese sony/panasonic), truth is these days they become obsolete before they go wrong so quite a few working TVs get thrown.

I've got an old GEC "portable" telly off from my Grandad that's at least 25 years old..!!
The funny thing is, with it's metal loop aerial it picks up a better signal and gives a clearer picture than any of my new portables..!!!
On average though, I'd say up to ten years...?

Although the warranty was out, it is reasonable to expect more than a fraction over one years use from such a purchase, so he would still have a case under the sale of goods act. £600 is a lot of money to roll over and die about one week out of warranty IMHO. If I were him I'd kick up a fuss.

My Sony is 16 years old. It still works but occasionally develops a little fault which magically mends itself a day later
I don't really watch that much telly so I loathed to replace it. Having said that, if it was the family dog, I'd be giving serious consideration to having it put down

29 inch Sony CRT, 12 years old and counting, even allowing for it being in the kids lounge.
Orion portable some years ago, 1 year and 1 day, piece of crap.
I wonder if the LCD's will last as long, longer or the same.
