Default Sky not as clear as NTL!

Just changed over from NTL cable to Sky satellite because of cost and ability to record on the Sky+ and notice that the picture quality is not as good.

If they can produce HD why can't they produce a standard picture as good as cable?

maybe channels with lesser viewing figures get narrower bandwidth?

E4 is poor, very "blocky" on NTL. Quality wise i find SKY is okay but Freeview the best.

Most channels on SKy are heavily compressed - as said above Freeview is much better...

Yeah, I'm a little disappointed.

The reason why I moved to Sky was because the video compression on cable was appalling - even on the main channels! Not to forget the worlds slowest user interface/guide.

Quality issues on Sky normally are caused by a weak signal (bear in mind signal strength on some channels can be stronger or weaker depending on which transponder they are transmitted on). Our LNB packed up last week, but over the previous weeks picture quality had noticeably degraded with noticeably higher compression artifacts (blockyness); quick check and low and behold, weak signal. At this point the point the picture never froze or juddered, except for last week when it died completely. New LNB and we're back to a perfect picture.

Hi.

What's LNB and how did you know you had a weak signal?

Deep,

The abbreviation LNB stands for Low Noise Block. It is the device on the front of a satellite dish that receives the very low level microwave signal from the satellite, amplifies it, changes the signals to a lower frequency band and sends them down the cable to the indoor receiver.
