All the packets advise at least once a day, but I have read this is just a scam to make you use more.
I think it's fine to feed fish every other day (but my girlfriend won't let me go a day without feeding them as she thinks it's cruel! )

You should feed fish maybe 3 times a week, and if there is any food left after approximately a minute, you have put too much in. It is dangerous to feed them much more, as the nitrites build up in the tank, and can kill fish. Ive had my fish for a long time, and they only get fed like this every other day.

in an ideal world you would feed them as often as they would eat in the wild - i feed my tank 7 times a day via automated food dosing.
my old tropical tank was feed 4 times a day - in the wild they would eat little and often, not a big lump 3 times a week (unless you are stocking pike!)
to feed based on nitrates is like not feeding your kids because they leave crumbs on the floor - improve your excess nutrient export with water changes/plants/etc

Thanks for the replies guys. I currently feed them once a day with a flake based food. Most of it gets eaten but some does settle to the floor in and amongst the gravel. However I have six clown loaches who are constantly sweeping the floor so should mop up any excess. I think a nitrate test kit may be in order to establish the quality of the water. Once again thanks for the info much appreciated.

Clown Loaches need feeding daily. I used to feed my fish every other day as advised by my local fish shop when I first started out. However since going to a much larger tank and using a new shop they have told me it should be at least once a day especially if there are Clown Loaches in the tank. Its simply a case of the more often you feed the more regularly you need to do water changes. My fish now demand to be fed the same time every night now by all shoaling at the same spot at the top of the tank every night.
Since feeding daily my Clown Loaches are growing at a rapid rate and thats how it should be. As mentioned though only enough food should be put in that will be consumed within 3 minutes (sounds a bit precise/short but watch your fish when you feed them and see how many are still eating at the end of 3 minutes, they will normally of had their fill by then and stopped eating). Any left over after 3 minutes and it should be scooped out before it breaks down into the water. If feeding more than once a day then a 10-15% water change should be done every 7 days and there should be good filtration in the tank.

Feeding fish seems to be as hot a subject for fish keepers, as I read often on here about oil and petrol to use. I conclude the same for both.
I would go with what suits you to do. I would rather have fish keen to eat than the lazy fish I often see sitting about tanks.
One thing I did notice I lost more fish doing regular weekly water changes before going on to use Eheim pro II filters on both my tanks and stopping the past practice even with boiled kettle water mixed with the new water.
Here are some fish which frequent my tanks.
Queen Arabesque Plec
L200 Lemon spotted Plec
Dupliecarius Cory
Harald Shulz Cory

Not all plecs, the Queen Arabesque sits at the front of the tank under its fav log in clear view. A great plec to buy for smaller tanks mine sits in Juwel 180 and leaves my plants alone.
The Lemon spotted swims freely all day. It likes digging and makes great scrapes in the sand under logs or stones. It shifts a lot with its fins, likes my 4ft tank, does not get on with the Leopard do not place in a tank with a lot of show veg.
The Leopard Plec I have had for two and half years is unphotographed, sits under its big log and hides, only seen in the dark and I have blue night lights to see him, or wait in the dark with a torch. Only wish a could get a decent pic to do his markings justice. Very aggresive with plecs or fish who challenge him in size I have only a male bristlenose who he tolerates because he stays in his cave at far end of the tank.
Best pic I have of the Lemon Plec

The Plecs that hide all the time really annoy me. I have 2 and you never ever see the things. All they do is eat, sh** and hide. They are contributing nothing to the overall aesthetics of my tank and as far as I am concerned they may aswell not be there.
