Mobile spee cameras
I am refering to the type you see on a tripod next to a van parked at the side of the road.
My question is do they flash like a static Gatso ?
Went past one today and my Road Angel was reading 32mph, just a tiny bit over the limit.
It was dark and there was no flash from the camera
Nik.

I wonder how they record your plate details accurately in the dark then?
It defo wasn't a tax van as the one they usually use has DVLA written on the side. This one had words to the effect of speed enforcement.

no, mobile speed cameras do not flash.
yes, you can get prosecuted at 31 mph in some counties.
yes, cameras use expensive infa red lenses to read plates in the dark.
yes, you have been warned.

yes, I do have a 2004 Jap spec C.

no, mobile speed cameras do not flash. mini gatsos do
yes, you can get prosecuted at 31 mph in some counties. unlikley, ACPO 10% +2mph
yes, cameras use expensive infa red lenses to read plates in the dark. I think you mean infra red cameras with infra red lighting- not very often used for mobile setup
yes, you have been warned. Thanks
yes, I am a copper. That was obvious by your inaccurate scare mongering

And you obviously work with ACPO as you forgot the word 'guidelines' at the end. I think you ought to take a drive through Derbyshire one day and drive past 4 speed cameras at 31mph. Then there will be another nice scooby on e-bay for others to enjoy !
It may cause some alarm, but I drive unmarked and fully marked Evo9's for a living. We did trial a hawkeye sti, but the built in rollcage won it for the evo. Not my personal choice, but then again not my decision.

Is it me or do i detect a little attitude in the plods response.
Can't think why they get a bad name.
I have nver heard of anyone being done for 1mph over the limit.
Nik.

So with rules like this thats only encouraging people to not take they're eyes of the speedo. Have you not heard the adverts about driving on a mobile phone which say you cannot concentrate on two things at the same time i.e driving and talking on a phone. How can you be concentrating on the road if your staring at your speedo because your too freightened of going 1mph over the speed limit. I'm sure even you will admit speed cameras are just another way for the goverment to rip the public off money!

I have heard of this, its a police urban myth. From the many case files over on pepipoo, no one that I can remember has ever been sent a nip for anything less than 10%+2mph either in Derbyshire or anywhere else in the country.
The offence of speeding is an absolute offence so, in theory, police have the right. In practice however, ACPO guidelines for minimum speed limit enforcement are adhered to. Imagine the backlash if you went round prosecuting people for 1 mph over the limit, with the already tattered image of the police would be shredded.

Humberside has mobile Gatsos in use. Box looks about 2' square and 18" high on a tripod and I'm pretty sure they're the same as the permanent variety in that they flash your rear plate after you pass. Difficult to spot as they are fairly low and the Frontera it comes in is parked out the way - surprise.

In practice the ACPO guidelines for minimum speed limits are exactly that, guidelines..Buy your self a copy of MCN every week if you really want to keep up with events about cameras, new installations and how different parts of the country enforce the speed limits...
Don’t forget all these safety partner cameraships have to generate revenue to survive, in Northampton they weren’t hitting their targets, so what do you do???...lower the speed limits and get more prosecutions..

speed doesnt kill!!!! crashing into or hitting things does!!!! it is a joke just them trying to make money and look like they improving safety! you show me anything that prives they help safety......they dont! and yes i know people who have been done for 31/32 in 30 limits and 43 in a 40. Always ask if they can prove that the device was calibrated on the day...... might have been 1 or 2 mph out if not :P
