The problem is that the folk that drive like fannies are more than often the ones that get away.
Much like this one we were at this weekend. HORRIFIC!!

Funny that, here in the UK, this speed is considered dangerous in its own right, whereas on the autobahn in Germany, it is not (on the unrestricted sections).

I remember reading about a german that was complaining that the windscreen wipers on his Porsche stopped being effective at 160mph.

He didn't really TWOC it in the sense we normally mean, though, did he?

It was a company vehicle - he worked for a leasing company - and though he didn't have permission to drive it he hadn't nicked it either.

Technically a TWOC, morally just a ****

Yes - Just a culture difference I suppose. I have been in a fair few cars down autobahns at that speed and although you are one of the quicker cars on the road no one really bats an eyelid.

And some of us, "cough", remember when it wasn't illegal in this country. Fewer cars of course but brakes weren't so good. I can recall being in a passenger in an Aston at around 145 mph. Can't even do half that now

Nope, its not. Thats like saying falling out of an aeroplane is dangerous...its not....its the sudden stop at the end thats the issue. Exteme velocity does not have to lead to a sudden stop when in a car.

That shows the different attitudes between us and Europe.

Nice bit of road the A420 near Abingdon, lots of fun in a scooby or on a bike.

Fairly obvious place for speed traps though, the A420 also has quite a high body count so it's a bit of a target.

What a load of bollox...
I've done a few more mph than that myself, I don't remember any cataclysmic event happening as soon as I went over 70 !!

No more dangerous than Mr Green doing 720 mph on dried salt.

It depends where you are doing the fast driving of course. I spent a good many years doing those speeds on the racing tracks. That was fine especially since the others were usually going in the same direction, and if they weren't, there were blokes with flags to let you know about it before you arrived.

It is a totally different scene on the public roads of course, especially on our overcrowded and largely inferior roads in this country. Of course very high speeds can cause an accident if you lose control of the car. The real point is however, that at higher speeds if something does happen, either to you or another car, you have lost so much of your safety margins that you may well not be able to avoid an accident whereas you could have done at a normal speed withing the speed limit.

The other point of course, which is similarly unarguable, is that at the higher speed, the results of the accident are almost certainly going to be considerably worse.

Public roads are not meant for would be ace drivers to show us how good they think they are at very high speeds, but as a means of getting from one place to another. There are always track days where you can frighten yourself silly if you want without endangering innocent other parties.
