I used to have them but find they bugger up my wrists after pronlonged use.
Also not quite got my hands clear of the bars in a tumble a few times with bar ends and had a bit splat.

Not if your serious about racing, have a look at the uci xc boy's and girls, no risers there me thinks.
The point of a barend is to keep your wrist in line with your forearm for greater efficiency whilst climbing, so its more of a race/performance thing really. As a result of the wrist being inline many find them a comfortable position to ride. On the down side, most run them on flat bars which are narrow and make the bike harder to control.
Personnally I race using a carbon riser as I think I gain more from greater control than the increased efficiency the flat plus riser offers, then again I'm no uci wippet .
