Agreed but, they have to be seen to be doing something about it and presumably, they are concentrating on the area most heavily populated with Bikes at the weekend in Essex....

I ran into an Essex "Responsible Rider" campaign thing at the side of the road on the Northern edge of Leaden Roding on Sunday and found out from the Essex Traffic cops that:

1. The Essex force sold all their Police bikes two years ago so now all the Police bikers have to stick to the cars.
2. The police bikers believe that this is a major contributory factor to the fact that the number of deaths of Motorcyclists in Essex this summer is on the rise
3. The fastest Traffic car they have is an ST200 which they don't believe will catch *any* Biker that's riding like a nutter....

If you live in or near Finchingfield in Essex, or ride a bike in Essex, then you probably already know about this but:

Finchingflield is a really nice village in the middle of Essex which the outside world makes a beeline for whenever the Sun comes out at the weekend. Hundreds of cars and Bikes converge on this village and it's really pissing off the residents. I went to the Essex Advanced Motorcyclists Social on Tuesday night and they read out a section from the minutes of the Finchingfield parish council meeting minutes (or something similar).

It read something like:

The local residents are fed up with cars and in particular, Bikes, speeding in and around the roads leading to and from Finchingfield. There have been 14 bikers killed in Essex in the last two months and now the Police have had enough. "They are now openly admitting to stopping 1 in 5 bikes with the intention of Policing them off the roads" (the meeting minutes words, not mine!!).

As part of this plan, they have numerous unmarked and marked cars in the area, lots of speed traps, concealed cameras and will nick you as soon as look at you.

Moral of the story, stay away from Finchingfield and this part of Essex if you want have some fun in your Scoob or particularly, if you want to have some fun on your bike.....

Hold on, isn't that restricting freedom of movement? Might have some human rights laws which say somthing about that.
I.E. ITS ILLEGAL TO DO THAT!
I hate police forces which think they are the guardians of the moral high ground.

Oh dear how sad never mind. The residents presumably knew that when they moved there. (Old folk who always lived there excepted).

This is a bit like people who move to the country and then object at cows mooing etc.

Or people moving in next door to a pub then complaining about the noise at 11:15pm.

Ffs, what's wrong with these people?

Do they fund the entire Essex police force on their own? Why are they a special category of village? Ok catch idiot drivers/bikers and ******** parkers, but don't set yourself up as "passport control" deciding who can and can't visit.

14 dead bikers in Essex is 14 too many, but for those of you who don't know it, get a map out and look at the size of Essex and its population density.

Another biker killed yesterday evening, in Wickford.

Aparantly you are 7 times more likely to die on a bike on a summers evening than at any other time.

Essex Police have order 6 1200cc Kawasakis, which are being derestricted at the moment.

My friend is a local Kwakker dealer and says they are capable of 200mph, just hope the riders are.

I can't believe they sold their bikes. To catch a bike, you need a bike. Just like an Escort panda car will not catch a Scoob etc.

Apart from that, any biker that has been stopped is more likely to heed any warnings/advice etc that a Police biker gives them than a copper in a car.

I live just up the road from Finchingfield.

It is unbelievable there in the summer. Thousands of people descend on it. It's a tiny village in the middle of nowhere, but with a through road, but you can't even drive through it at this time of year to get where you are going. The road is totally blocked with people/cars/bikes.

Don't give me all that old bollocks about "you shouldn't have moved there" - if someone came and parked on your front lawn, hundreds and hundreds of people cluttering up your road, leaving rubbish, causing noise like you wouldn't believe, YOU would soon be moaning about it.

Sunday bikers (not having a pop at you Matt) come through the 30mph limit in our village at about 60, round blind bends in the middle of the road when there are horses, cyclists, walkers about - we don't have pavements round here......I have been nearly wiped out by bikers on a number of occasions - one of my neighbours WAS killed by a biker that went through her windscreen last year...

I fully agree with the police campaign. Don't preach if you haven't seen the situation with your own eyes.....

Good - I think it's important that the cops have bikes beacuase.....

I agree and that's exactly what the Essex bike cops said to me on Sunday....

That's OK Dave, you know I don't ride like that - in fact I'm always being overtaken by **** bikers screaming through villages 'cos I'm sticking to the speed limit - I usually catch them up and pass them in the Nationals though....

And Barry - whilst I'm not happy about the Police tactics, I have to sympathise with the Finchingfield residents, it's a lovely place and is ruined by the mass invasion every weekend - also, if you were a traffic cop and had scraped 15 peeople off the road in the last 8 weeks then you might loose you patience with us lot....

My standard sunday morning bike run is up through the roddings, great dunmow and stop in a fichingfield for a coffee & snack then head north before swinging back through thaxted to london.

Stunning roads.

But i've got to agree - fichingfield has got stupid. As usual, you get the loud bikes nailing their throttles out of the village and revving their engines at 9am. To be honest my biggest worry these days on the bike is not being taken out by a car, but by some guy on his R1 coming round the corner out of comtrol on my side of the road - its happened too many times recently. Most sundays i'll come across someone who has gone in too hot and is parked in the verge. Ridiculus.

I've got a piped, jetted sports bike, with all the kit and I play at getting my knee down, wheelying, etc, etc. So i'm not coming from the angle of ban the bikes. But there is a huge difference in having regard for others and behaving like an ****.

I dislike this whole subject. But I can understand completely where the police and residents are coming from. Its not the occasional guy going a bit quick, its large numbers of riders completely taking the pi55 and having no regard for local residents or other road users.

As it happens there were several police bikes (marked and unmarked) out last weekend.

Not in Essex there wasn't 'cos they haven't got any - there were however a few Honda Pans that looked like they *might* be cop bikes because the Police had to borrow them from Honda just so they could do some assessment rides as part of the Responsible Rifer campaign.

But as Pete mentioned, it sounds like the Essex force has seen sense and is buying some new Bikes.....

yep - all very sad

There's some guy who lives in my road (long cul de sac in Wapping) who enjoys wheelying his 996 between the parked cars and kids playing football at the side of the road. At the same time there are a couple guys - a fiesta and a nova who floor it along the same bit of road, in the wet, in the dark, whatever.

What is it with these people ?

I find this hard enough to put up with, so I can appreciate the finchingfield people being up in arms. You see this and can then appreciate where the police are coming from.

Anyway. Two track days in the next week for the car, two days at rockingham booked for the bike and my first club race at donnington set for september. Thats got to be the way to go.

Nope - definetly saw two pairs of fully marked up pan-euro's between the roddings and finchingfield and also a guy who had been pulled by an unmarked blue bike on the same stretch (cant recall make - but the standard thing: k series m, pan-euro or even a yam div 1000). Obviously I can't say whether they were essex or borrowed, or whatever.

I remember it clearly though, because it was so unusual, i tend to ride in the morning before it gets too busy and had never seen any plod on these roads before.

Looks like it will be the long run down the A2 on sunday to get out to Kent...

Or I could borrow the wifes f650 and still head up through essex - just as fast as the sports bikes through the lanes, but it qualifies as "Bike least likely to get pulled on"
