"It contains several inaccuracies and paints an alarming picture of the impact of national road tolls on families.
It claims that the Government is planning to force drivers to spend up to £200 on a tracking device that will monitor all their movements, charge them £89 a month in road tolls and catch them every time that they exceed the speed limit.
It also claims that “all drivers will be paying far more than today"
Inaccuracies my ****. All of that is true.

Why does it matter who set it up. The fact that so many people signed it, myself included, shows how unpopular it is!
I'm sure I saw a programme where a stay-at-home-mum was charged a large amount for just ferrying her kids to school and back.
What is the alternative?

I think the pertinent point being that these POLLS are signed by the mis-guided and led by the weird .....
The majority of drivers in this country WANT to see us Impreza Turbo owners pay heavily for our pleasure .....
Don't forget it .....

It's a glorified chain email, no more productive than a virus or one that will give you a squillion years bad luck if you dont send it to ten friends...
Edited to say - of course the content was scaremongering - how else to make yourself famous on the back of a government policy via a chain email

Depends on where they will reduce charges ... if no more Car Tax - then, yes!! I do!!
I will be very much better off.
If it is ADDITION to what we pay now, then NO!! they can shove it where the sun don't shine

Of course there will now be a hurriedly commissioned poll by the government full of loaded questions that will show the public want road tax up by 200%, road pricing at £50 per mile and speed limits reduced to 5mph

How? No car tax means you'll be £175 (or thereabouts) a year better off before Jocko Brown's charge per mile kicks in. Unless, of course you get a reduction for being a daft old tw@t in which case you'll stand to save even less.

Article says "The Government has never suggested that the charging system would be used to monitor the speed of vehicles"
It might not have suggested it, but I bet it has thought about it, and been discussed and temporarily shelved as its too controversial.
However I have no doubt that in due course it will be used for speeding.
Article Says "The Association of British Drivers, which believes that speed limits should become advisory rather than compulsory and campaigns for the abolition of speed cameras"
Whats wrong with that? They are almost certainly referring to speed limits at particular points or times of day. Take a rural school a spped limit of 30mph may be too high at 8.45am on school day, but in the Holidays 40mph may be more than reasonable. Speed cameras do they really improve safety? I doubt it, I bet that drivers who have been stopped by a police officer and lectured of the danger of speeding (whether charged or not) modify their behaviour for longer than those caught on a camera.

PSL,
What you say sounds convincing enough, it will be interesting to see if they do abolish the road fund tax but that is at least a way to see if a car is insured and MOT'd so if that goes by the board we will see even more dangerous and uninsured "Q" cars on the roads.
I find it difficult to believe that they will abolish road fund tax however since it has not been used for road building or maintainance for a good many years now.
Whatever happens, we will wind up paying considerably more to put a car on the roads I am sure. He won't miss a chance like that!

If roads are taxed, if petrol is taxed instead of the disc, then they will have to pay like the rest of us ....... or just steal more expensive fuel?

Well the answer to that is to catch them and get them off the roads for all the good reasons, not least the safety of others.
We desperately need many more road traffic police cars on the roads.

The article is absolute rubbish, the petition has not been 'hijacked' by the ABD at all. You'll probably find that the majority of the signatures have come from members of the Federation of Small Businesses who have been lobbying parliament in an attempt to keep transport costs down. The FSBs National Transport Chairman, Steve Collie has been circulating this petition to members for some time now.
