Planning a few days R&R and unbridled pampering/luxury in Scotland, have done Gleneagles/St Andrews/Balmoral etc but want something further north?

Anyone have any recommendations for decent hotels/restaurants/remote 'accomodating' castles..etc in the more northerly parts of Scotland?

Neverending gratitude....

Gary,

Driving around or not?

I had a fantastic holiday around the western islands (even better if you like a nice malt ) but it was a lot of driving.

The Ferry company (Caladonia Macintosh) offers cheap rover tickets that give you a large number of crossings.

We drove to Ardrossan (Dumfries area), caught a ferry to Arran, stayed in a pub on Arran for a couple of days, ferry to Islay, stayed in an excellent hotel there for a day or so, Ferry back to the mainland onto the Kintyre, stayed at a fabulous place called Stonefield Castle, then ferry onto Mull for a nights stay in an excellent B&B in Tobermory.

Ferry back to mainland via Oban (more nice malts), stopping in a B&B on the side of Loch Lomond on the way home.

Have all the details of all the places we stayed, photos of scenery etc if you are more interested, but it was about 2000 miles round trip of driving (fine in a fully expensed company car ) but you might not want the miles on your scoob

Hope this helps,

Alex

Try searching for posts on the tour d'eccosse in the Scotland section.

We usually base ourselves in the Isles of Glencoe hotel in Ballchulish (south of Fort William). A very nice hotel with fantastic scenery all around.

I think there is a website for the tour and possibly the hotel kicking around somewhere - I'll have a look and post it up if I find it

Cool

Depends how far north you mean

I would suggest the Ballachulish hotel http://www.freedomglen.co.uk

Make sure that you check out there special rates page.

Great staff, fantastic food, and the views

You can base yourself here and easily do a day trip up the side of Loch Ness to Inverness across the top and back down the west coast via Eilan Donan castle (everyone HAS to visit this place at least once).

Enjoy

Andrew.

Try this one on Skye - talk about secluded.

You can "walk" round the hotel on their webpage and see what you think. Live like a laird for a week. I think it was featured on "Europe a La Carte" the TV program we got here a year or so ago but hopefully it hasn't changed too much since they re-fitted it.

Cool

Get yourself a Which Good Food guide, loads of great place in there, my personal favorite is Kinnaid House in Dunkeld(just Nrth of Perth). Absolutely superb.

Peat Inn near St Andrews is also very good.

Cheers
Cammy

Alex, forgot to comment. Yes driving, but need a week's R&R not a week in the car

Gleneagles looks to be the choice so far, with an over nighter in Edinburgh to go to the Witchery
