Default Home cinema set-up

When wirring a DVD-r into the system, can I take a scart from my sky box output - through to the dvd-r input, then from the dvd output through to the video input, then via the video output off to the TV input....

can I also do the same with the main tv ariel cable, providing terestrial to both dvd & video players.

lots of wirring.....

TBH I don`t know. I find that if you try something and it doesn`t work, keep trying. But then I never read the destruction manual
BTW I had a right job with my plasma

DVD-R is a type of disk, so wiring that into a system won't help.

Assuming you mean DVD recorder, then yes, as long as your DVD recorder and your video player support SCART loop through (most do). You could also do the same with the TV aerial cable.

Be aware that you'll get much better picture if you can use component/RGB connections through the chain, and a lot of older VCRs don't support that. Therefore, you might be holding back the picture quality of the Sky box and the DVD by routing the scart through the video recorder.

Best bet is to get a decent tv / plasma / lcd that has a lot of inputs or a separate media box into which you can connect your myriad of cables.

The co-ax would be OK wired like that.

I'm fairly sure you'd need all the devices on if you wanted to do it with scart though.

Get rid of the video player and life gets simpler

Fuzz

I have a complete Sony system with a Plasma TV & payed the earth for it all,

I also have a quite costly Sony DVD-R & to be quite honest I'm not happy with record quality, especially of you stretch the recording time.

The video is Panasonic & I will keep this in line as I feel it's much better for long duration recording, plus I also record music direct to video, so that I can record albums & have upto 8hrs of good quality sound's.

Works well in the summer for party's etc

What's wrong with a hard disc in a PC, they do digital live out now..

I've got 20.31GB which gives me 257hrs playback time... That's enough for parties in my book and you can also have the TV on for the random visualisations for added effect!

Sod the optical.
It has to convert it to from digital to optical and then the opposite at the other end..
Just stick with digtal coax and HDMi

My Tv uses smartlink(sony) and the tv talks to the DVD player and configure automatically but the SKY has to go into the DVD player first so you can record directly from the SKY...as per your original post

And then out to a video & on to the TV, is that do-able....

If you're going to try that, make sure you have fully pinned scart leads/plugs as it uses some of the redundant pins to talk to the TV.

Daisy chain the RF (tv) through the devices as you originally said but use a SCART distribution amp for the rest. Go from the back of your Sky box into the DA and then from the DA to your DVD-R, video and TV set.

SCART DISTRIBUTION AMPLIFIER

HTH.

Hate to get technical, but optical connections transmit digital data too, so you aren't converting it from digital to optical, you are transmitting the same digital data optically rather than electrically.

I won't bother with the technicalities of the circuits, but basically you either transmit digital data electrically through a co-ax, ideally with impedance balanced line drivers, or optically through a fibre, with "fast flashing lights". Both keep the data digital, and as long as they transmit the digital data properly and have suitable jitter correction, etc etc, both should in theory be able to transmit a perfect signal once the pulses have been "tidied up" at the receiving end.
