Exclamation Independent Doctor Needed 4 Cancer !

Firstly I would like to start with PLS do not reply any jokes as this is a very soft topic !

The bad news is that my mum had it after a few years of hardship but now she’s still here with us & feeling much better then before !
(THANK GOD)

Now my G'dads got it but the problem is.. My G'dad ( mum's side ) has lung cancer & in afew other places too !!! Hes really old late 80's but was really well & fit until he found out the bad news!

He's been on my case now, but im only 21 years old & don’t know hardly anything about this subject. He wants me to find him an independent doctor in London who he can talk to & get advice good from. Is there anyone out there who are aware of anyone who could provide me with there name & number that can help me on this subject as my G'dad wants to find out second opinion on this matter. Hes old & don’t seem to understand anything when someone says no, when they want something they want it & there's no 2 ways about it!

So im asking you ALL for help if you can give me a few names & numbers which doctors will be able to help me out !

Many thanks 2 you all 4 reading.

Cool

Just go to your local GP. Despite the state of the heath service, cancer treatment is still very good, and quick.

Why does he want an independant docotr anyway? Is he afraid that he will ge told at his age it is not worth treating?

It's quite a common knee-jerk reaction I think, a lot of people I know who have been diagnosed with cancer or had a relative diagnosed with it all seem to do the same thing - try and get second opinions or offer to go private thinking it will help their treatment or they spend hours on the net searching for alternative cures etc.

I went through this feeling about 3 months ago, when my wife Alison was diagnosed with cancer of the cervix.

Stick with your GP and their referral to your NHS cancer spacialists. Cancer treatment is good and is paid for by the NHS. If you go private you may find the same people treating you except you're paying for it (quite heavily as cancer treatment isn't cheap)

Our thoughts are with you. We're currently having chemo and radiotherapy at the moment, and its very difficult, but we're going to come through this!!

There was a very interesting thing on Radio 4 last week, apparently many people have cancer and dont know it, there is new treatment which is basically just monitoring it as some grow so slowly they won't kill you in a normal lifetime, especially for older patients, their cells dont repair themselves as well but conversely cance cells dont grow as quickly so for some if they got the cncer in their 20's or 30's it would be game over but because they are older it doesnt grow as quickly, the chap next door to my mums lasted six years after diagnosis and died of something else.

Good look with getting your grandad the help he needs.

I think you should find the the cancer treatment on the NHS is pretty good now and that they will do all they can to help him. That is what I found and I am eternally grateful to the consultants and the nurse and doctors who took such good care of me.

You could take him to a private consultant for a second opinion since that is what he really wants, but it will cost of course. It depends on how badly he is affected but it may make him feel better and be worth the expense. Maybe his own doctor could give him good advice about getting a second opinion.

Good news about your mother of course.

I am really sorry to hear that - you are not alone here though and it helps to talk things through in relative anonimity.

Its a natural reaction from your Grandpa, I've been there (twice), but as already mentioned the treatment on the NHS is pretty good. He must be really worried and at his age probably a little confused and panicky. His GP can arrange a second opinion. Main thing is for the family to provide plenty of suuport. I hope it all works well for him ..............
