In all seriousness, this is bad news.

I'd have an educated guess that within the next 20 years each of our 5 million CCTV cameras (this figure will grow exponentially, of course) will have audio surveillance capability. Really quite gutting.

I'll humour you with a response.

I don't want to spend my one life concious of an authoritarian state who have the facility to observe and listen.

I want to know that should the people within my country wish to react against an over bearing state, then they will be able to do so and formulate action in privacy.

In short; you, me and 99% of the population who are perfectly law abiding and civilised have nothing to hide but our privacy.

My feelings were more elequently expressed by Ben Franklin:

"Those who would give up essential liberty to purchase a little temporary safety, deserve neither liberty nor safety"

I think you partially believe in the benefits of blanket surveillance but, when your position is exposed as untenable, you over state your point so that an observer may interpret your views as trolling. Either way I find your stance unconvincing.

On Question Time a couple of weeks back whilst discussing ID cards, Michael Heseltine said to an audience member, "but the horse has already bolted and the game is lost", implying that protest was futile. It's never too late, but there's no doubting that should one wish to take action to prevent future generations living without true liberty, then one must risk falling foul of the Prevention of Terrorism Act.

Of course I'll be alright, Jack, because all I want to do is earn a few quid and have a good time. Imagine for a moment though, that these powers had been available to the state c.1640; the notion of Parliament and Democracy may never have been realised. Fast forward to the turn of the 20th Century and we have the Suffragettes. Emily Pankhurst and co burned down churches, vanadalised Oxford Street, chained themselves to Buckingham Palace and attacked Politicians as they went to work as well as fire bombing their homes. Were women entitled to the vote? Did they change the shape of Great Britain and the World? Were they Terrorists?

If the state is in total control of it's people, the people have lost their means to combat tyranny. Anyone who supports the implementation of these apparatus condones treachery and can not call themselves a patriot.
