Default advice about employer no 1

Hi all,

my mrs was off sick the other friday and a woman from her work called 9 times in as many minutes on her mobile and called the home phone about the same amount, not leaving voice mail on her phone, finally she relented and got out of bed to answer it, she had a kidney infection so it hurt quite a bit, the massive dilema was they wanted her pass word for her e mail account.

what laws/rights do you have to not be contacted on personal numbers, its not a work phone when off ill or holiday?

thanks

Ray

Can't answer about the law, but I DO know that when I worked in a similar situation, I refused to give my home number, and didn't have a mobile.

They made a lot of fuss, but I held out, and nowt more was said

Unless you are married/co-habiting and they can't contact your partner at home to tell them you've been in a serious work-related accident/had a heart attack.

She (or you) should contact her employer to inform him of her absence, at that time she (or you) should of informed them not to call the house.... did you do that?

Your wife should of taken her mobile phone (clue's in the name) to bed with her then she wouldn't need to get up to answer the house phone........

Last I heard kidney's aren't connected to the mouth therefore why did she feel unable to spend all of 3 minutes providing this information in the first place?

Agree with alcazar..... if you don't want to be contacted don't give them your home phone number in the first place.

Whats the big deal ???
They need her email password, work carries on even when someone is sick.
Its not like they called all through the day.

I thought that you were not allowed to access other peoples' email accounts or share passwords

I think no body should have typed any password to access her mailbox.

If it was meant to be read by others it should be appropriately shared.

i know she was ill as i was in the docs with her, the point is ring once, leave a message, dont ring, hang up, ring, hang up ring hang up for 15 mins one call staright after the next, especially over something trivial, it annoyed me no end, she had rung to say she was not able to work that day,

she didnt take the mobile to the bed room as she wanted to sleep

seem pathetic and stupid to keep ringing and made me very angry at the invasion really as work dont pay for her personal mobile and should not abuse it in this manner

Crap management. If she was in such a critical role that her email was needed daily, it should be shared or IT should reset the password without bothering her. I assume she did call her manager to report her sickness? If the management knew what they were doing, they'd have a "sick list" of questions that is filled out by the manager she calls (passwords, meetings that will be missed etc). Unless she is off work due to "work related stress" and they are still calling her at home, then there's nothing you can do about it. Personally, I'd have unplugged the house phone, put the mobile on silent and waited for a voice mail.

employment law states you should not be conatcted at home while sick UNLESS when you book sick they ask you whether you agree to be contactable at home and only then it should be for welfare calls only ie how you doing?,how long do you anticipate being off? , is there anything we can do? not for passwords to pcs HOWEVER i take it she would like to go back to this job, so assisting where possible then saying please leave me alone is not unreasonable, that is i`m assuming you knew who was calling and chose to ignore it.

my wifes boss called for a similar thing once when we were on holiday he appreciated the invasion and i got a very fine bottle of scotch that xmas and my wife something equally as nice (though i cant tell you what it was as i was pissed for some reason!)
