I need a new MTB
I have a Muddy Fox Alu team edition tripple butted which I have had for about 8 years. I am quite a hard /fast rider. So I am supprised this bike has lasted this long.
Now I had thought about getting a Full suspension bike, but I thought about it and have decided not to.
I have been looking at specialized bikes, Kona, Merlin etc and I like the Specialized Stumpjumper HT Expert for 2007 model priced at £1499.99.
Seen here
http://www.evanscycles.com/product.jsp?style=70141
Does this look like a good bike for the money??
This bike is 'quite' a bit better that my bike so I thought I would get a bike that has a very good spec that would last me a good 'few' years like my MFX has.
Also are Evan a good store to buy from as my nearest is in MK. There are nearer bike stores i.e leisure wheels
Cheers
Thanks in advance.

Personally, I'd NOT buy a bike imported from the states, since I saw the mark-up on decent frames from over there: around 120%
Why not buy yourself a decent frame off e-bay, then build a bike on it yourself?
I got my youngest a Guess Scandium frame from Supercycles, we built it up with LX and XT stuff, and rigid forks as he doesn't like suspension. It weighs in at sub 20lb and cost less than £750 all in.

Evan's reputation can be hit and miss if you surf the MTB sites like Singletrackworld.com and BikeMagic.com. I've used them for bits of clothing and they've always been fine.
Wiggle.co.uk are being very agressive with the German Focus brand they import. The Focus Raven is What MTBs best hardtail under £1000 (see current magazine in the shops).
If you're happy spending £1500, find a Pace dealer and get a build done on a RC303 frame which looks very sweet and has been getting rave reviews of late.

It's a good spec bike, though I've always gone for ****mano rather than XRam.
It's a lot for a hardtail IMHO, but I prefer full sus (had a Spec Enduro, but had to swap it for Scooby insurance...).
Specialized have a different feel to many bikes - make sure you get a good test.
The top tube tends to be long (too long for me as my legs are proportionally longer than my arms), and the bottom braket tends to be low. This is good for handling, but you can catch you pedals on rocks.
Fox forks ware worthy of the hype, though I think the cheaper ones are much better value for money.
Defo get a good test ride for that sort of money though - many local shops will have demo bikes.
Can't comment on Evans I'm afraid.
Remeber come October you can get some great bargains on the current year's models, including Spec's.

OK, I can go with the comment about NOT building.
Have you looked at Merlin Cycles near Leyland, Lancs?
They offer a series of builds at different levels on different frames, ranging from steel through various levels of ally to Ti.
EXCELLENT build quality including their own renowned handbuilt wheels, you can spec almost what you want. Their bikes won MBUK awards last year.
Good prices too.......
Alcazar
BTW: Supercycles will build you a bike on that frame I mentioned too.
Having a bike built, or building one, often looks daunting and possibly expensive, BUT:
* it gives you chance to spec what YOU want, not what the big companies get cheapest.
* because of the above, you rarely, if ever, upgrade, so it works out cheaper.
Even with LX and XT, my youngerst hasn't upgraded ONE single component yet, and has only replaced his rear mech after a crash.

I've got a stumpjumper. Excellent bike. The only other hardtails I like are the Orange P7, lovely steel frame. Or the Merlin Malt 1 with every upgrade they have on it (very good value).
I'm actually saving for a road bike, but a titanium HT is also on the cards.
Also...don't forget the On One 456 www.on-one.co.uk, £899, best value HT you can buy..looks the nuts too.

I can't stop looking at that on one bike, it's beautiful. I may well sell my stumpy at get one of them...the only limiting factor is size, they jump from 16" to 18" and I can't really test them cos they're miles away

I have looked at Orange, but they seem a little out of my budget. Look loverly British made bike.
I have a rather big problem im 6ft 41/2" tall so I will have to do for a 21" frame or a Xlarge frame.
So I am guessing I will have to order the bike at a bike shop before I can test it. As they are unlikely to have on in stock unless I am very lucky.
I have heard good things about merlin bikes and have seen some of there bike reviews.
