'cheap' sat nav systems
Guy’s n girls
Are the cheaper (under £200) sat nav systems any good? Any recommendations?
Where’s the best place to buy from? I was thinking of Halfauds ?
Do they need installing or just simply plug into a cigarette lighter socket and away you go?
Any advice welcome.
TIA

Got a Garmin Streetpilot i3 from Comet - http://www.comet.co.uk/comet/html/cache/647_285005.html
Trouble is it was 99.99 when I got it a few weeks ago ....
Works great - gets me to places I don't know .... Easy to use and you can get Scamera maps off the web. You can also add your own 'points of interest' ...
Plugs into cigarette lighter. Missus is a bit dubious about it but that's just because she can't get behind the logic of how it operates/gives instructions. Like it'll say 'turn right' when the road goes around a 90 deg bend. However it is *correct* because the named road it is on goes straight on - just that in practice the *driving road* turns right onto another named road. But I believe most are like that anyway.
I guess that the more expensive ones are, maybe, easier to work and you may get full Euro maps or something, but for the price I think it's a bargain.

All the models in halfords are consistantly £30-£50 dearer than you can get the units from most online stores.
I have just got a navman icn530 for £180 from Ebay (Halfords price was £230 iirc) and am just waiting for it to arrive.

Bought my Lass a Tom Tom One and it's great. Used it quite a bit so far and has yet to fail. I don't actuall see the point in getting one that costs hundreds unless anyone can tell me different

Far better would be a PDA with a built in GPS receiver. I paid under £200 for a Mitac Mio168; all I need now is a moody copy of TOMTOM and a £10 memory card..... As you can imagine, it has all of the features of a TOMTOM unit with the functionality of a PDA (you can watch films on it or use it as an MP3 player too).

A heads up for garmin i3 owners. If your unit has v7 maps, you can freepost the sd card back to garmin and they will update it to the new v8 maps for FREE.
You don't get that service with tomtom!
