Default New leather sofa / Big dog

Thinking about replacing my current fabric sofa for a leather one but have a large dog who is allowed and accustomed to sitting / sleeping on the sofa.

Concerned that his claws my wreck the new leather. Anyone have any experience?

Claws, teeth, drool, ****, mud, ****, sick............ take your pick as a dog can do any of those.......... now if you're happy buying a new sofa and your dog scratching it fine........... otherwise stick with what you have or teach the dog to sit on the floor.................

PS - I hate it when people let their smelly hairy dogs sit on their sofas then expect you to sit there........ dog hair anyone.........

I bought a cheaper leather suite so as if my dogs do spoil it I won't lose any sleep over it.
Thus far however I have had no marks on it and they do get up on it at some point just about every day.

I would say that if you are gonna have a sofa, leather cleans up easier as opposed to a fabric sofa where you will unknowingly sit in a pool of drool or a bit of **** and not know it

I think you should be OK assuming mutt doesn't normally scratch furniture. Can't you teach him to lie on blanket on sofa??

As above leather wipes clean easily. I take it he doesn't smoke so he won't fall asleep and drop a *** down the side

My Lab goes on the sofa. As far as I'm concerned, he's a member of the family. He does know when I say "off", his place is on the floor.

However, that is when we have proper guests, not when regulars come round to visit. If they don't like it tough ****. The dog's part of the package.

9/10 times, he that pleased to see people, he'll stay on the floor coz he gets more fuss that way.

The advantage about him bein up on the sofa is that he gets nice and warm (albeit noisy through snoring!) - bring on the Winter nights

Back on topic though, we've got a half-decent sofa (now not so-decent - due to two young kids rather than dogs. Not defaced, but just worn) with throws on top of it. They get changed every fwe days, just to keep it all clean

Leather will be on the cards, but sooo many other priorities first. My sister has my dog's sister (bought the pups at the same time). They have leather and the dog is NOT allowed on the them. Granted, they also use the dog as a working gundog, so its role is different. Not as much a family pet.....

People with dogs have smelly houses............. the strange thing is that they always appear to not notice the 'wet dog' smell.... maybe they are just used to it............

generalisation there DCI. People who don't clean their house have the dog smell.
Can only speak for my house. But with exception for the constant vacuuming up of dog hair, ours is spotless.

Get more mess/smells for the kids

forgot to add, don't need to have pets to have a stinky house. Life of grime proves that

But it helps............ (sorry can't resist)

Seriously are you saying you can't smell there's a dog living in your house...

Bet your visitors can, and I'm not meaning to offend, it's not a your dirty or unclean type comment.... it's just 'they' have a smell......

Dogs ruined my Mothers leather sofa, they had always been allowed up and are quite boistorous.

We have two cats, they won't sit on our leather sofa unless its on their blanky or a cushion. (how spoilt are they?)

No offence taken mate

The is no dog smell in our house - kept clean. I'm not saying there isn't a dog smell though. Endless air fresheners etc keep it smelling nice.

The bigger problem, as stated earlie, is the kids

However, Wet dog smell is awful. Agreed. Ours stay outside until they've cleaned themselves up or dried off. Even then, they aren't allowed on the sofa. Their dog basket is out in the Utility room

Like with most hygiene-related issues, you've got to keep on top of it, otherwise it does start to smell.

And yes, I've also been to houses where the pet smell you've mentioned is quite evident. Just not in our place

We have leather sofas, the dog is not allowed on them, mind you he doesn't use his bed either and prefers to lie on the floor. All downstairs floors are either wood floorboards or ceramic tiles, makes hair removal eaiser and it better from a dust perspective as the mrs is asthmatic.

Dog does occasionally get his front paws on the sofa to pick a toy up that's been left - so far no damage.
