Progressive scan HDTV
So, I have been waiting to upgrade to HDTV for some time now, largely because I have been so busy with work I don't watch much TV anyway, but also because I wanted to wait for prices to drop and specs to rise.
However, every time I go into a major high street electronics retailer and mention 1080P support, they look at me completely blankly. Are there any sets out there yet with progressive scan support?

make sure the set supports HDCP on the HD socket too.
Some budget brands dont do this and hence, are not truely "HD Ready"

That is the most annoying thing, almost all of these sets have the official HD Ready logo on them yet in the majority of cases that doesn't appear to be fully true!

To get a TV to display 1080 progressive you'll need a resolution of 1920 x 1080.
As far as I know there aren't many tv's around capable of that type of resolution at the moment.
Toshiba have released the 42WLT66 which can (or it may just de-interlace the 1080i signal), not sure which other sets can.
To be honest I wouldn't worry about that for a good few years yet.

I won't be buying an HDTV until 1080p screens are readily available. Even though there's not much content available yet, I don't intend to change TV's more than once every ten years.
Sony have a new 1080p model out imminently which is supposed to be pretty good.... can't remember the details though I'm afraid.

Apparently they will not be broadcasting 1080p for a long time, it needs way too much data. 1080i and 720 is the HDTV std for broadcasting in the UK.
You will see 1080p media players on the market for films, but we have a format war on our hands at the moment.
1080i will still be a good buy, and looks rather impressive. The sets are reasonable money now as well.

But yeah, HD will be obselete by the time we get the PS3... instead we'll be on Ultra HD

Ultra High Def
Slim
Was at IBC this weekend saw the ultra high def. Very impressive particularly on the 56" 4k by 2k resolution LCD, just like looking out of a window at the japanese scenery they were showing.
The projected show was not as impressive as I think we were sat too close. I don't think the 22.2 channel surround sound that goes with it will catch on though. My fiance didn't like the idea of that many speakers in the living room!
Craig.

Sharp have some 1080P LCD's out at the end of the month that sound good. IIRC the 46" is around £2K which isn't bad (much cheaper than the Sony X Series). AV Forums is the place to go for info on all this stuff.

I would love a HD TV just for the xbox 360, but I don't really want a 720p set when 1080p will soon be affordable. The 1080p set will be far better for use with HD-DVD when it's available.
I heard Sony are releasing a W-series, apparently more affordable 1080p sets... not quite sure if thats true though, only what I read on Avforums.
