Question Just got onto Skype, anyone else?

Seems like a smart idea as i am in Dubai ans Jenny is in the UK until later this year, free calls or greatly reduced call chages with Skype-out it seems.

Any problems or issues i should be aware of as a Skype newbie?

Hello

Skype is okay, as are most of the VoIP providers.

I prefer using other companies as you can get local numbers that people can call you from a normal phone (like your parents for example) as well as free VoIP -> VoIP calls. I use http://www.sipgate.com to have a local English number that rings where-ever I am and http://www.gizmoproject.com/ to have a local US number that rings where-ever I am.

Been on Skype for a year, love it, waaaay cheaper than anything the (crap) Portuguese telecoms market can offer. Nicer quality calls too.

Just set up a webcam to allow parents to see their granddaughter, and royally shafted my PC though Stick to headphones...

You can do all of that with Skype (SkypeIn) although they dont have a full range of UK STDs, I picked an 0121 but at least you can have PSTN->VoIP calls and free voicemail.

my son is on Skype all the time. chats to his mates in Plymouth for free - which is good as this would be an expensive phone call. i think he may also use it to help with online gaming - not sure how though...

Check its available, I thought I heard Dubai did have issues with VoIP being barred unless you went with the local operator.

I heard that too. Sometimes living in 'paradise' has its disadvantages!

We use the [currently free] Skype video a lot to keep in contact with family and friends all over Europe .

I wish i lived in paradise.

However the sun is shining, the beach is 1km away and no drunks spoiling for a fight at night and i can walk in the park at 9pm without fear of being robbed or offered drugs or abused by chavs.

Oh and petrol - 94p per ggallon.

Maybe not paradise but better than the uk in some ways, did mention the lack of income tax here?

what i earn is what i get in my pay packet. How many can say that

The skype site is blocked as is a lot of questionable 'çontent'

All you need it for someone to send you the software and heh-presto.

As for top-ups i understand it is not a problem.

I think they block certian portals or summit, but this affects other things so they do this intermittenly. What i know about telecoms you could write on a sim card in crayon.

I have been onto Germany twice and the UK once today without a problem and with a headset it is crystal clear.
