New Nigerian Scam
Sadly a friend has fallen foul of what I suspect is a facet on the usual Nigerian fraud.
Basically, this is the sequence of events.
Friend advertises item(s) on a popular sales service
Friend receives interest from a party in UK who wishes to pay £3000 more than marked value.
Cheque arrives from Barclays Bank (not a personal cheque)
Cheque is banked and (Stupidly!!!!!!!!!!!) £3000 is drawn in cash
Cash taken to Western Union to purchase a transfer note to some name in Nigeria.
Transfer note is sent.
Goods still in house
Phone call made to purchaser who says "Ahh - don't want it now - Keep it"
Is it only me or can we expect the initial cheque of (Goods Value + £3000)
to get refused payment by the receiving bank?
It's not me by the way !!!

There is no way I would do anything with any money until the cheque had cleared and i had those reddies in my account. And TBH that doesn't sound like a new facet of the Nigerian scam, that IS the Nigerian scam!!
Unlucky.

I would wholeheartedly recommened everyone to visit www.419eater.com to read some of the real life horror stories about people who have fallen for this sort of scam, and the ways that many hundreds of people with a few minutes spare in their day are fighting back (without risk). There is no level of greed that some of these scammers think is too far.
Some of the stories where people have got the scammers to do amazing things are very funny indeed.

Or the guy who travelled from London to Glasgow supposedly to collect $11,500 in cash, only to find out that the person he was talking to, was baiting him all along! Mind your ears for the language, but the .mp3 files of their phonecalls when the scammer realises he's been scammed are priceless! http://www.419eater.com/html/mohamed_lucien.htm
Or the people who have been conned into creating (quite impressive) artwork and carvings in the hope that they'll get a huge grant for their talent to open art schools!

So the bad guys don't always win, but - with the OP's friend, they certainly did!

Those are all excellent baits - but the longest running (since early 2005 and still going!) is the Anus Laptops saga at http://thescambaiter.com/forum/showthread.php?t=1132
It's well worth taking a few days to read it all through - the mugu gets shipped several boxes of junk and broken domestic appliances, at his own expense by DHL from the USA - imagine what that must cost. And he still wants more
It's absolutely hilarious, especially some of the phone calls with 'Butch Driveshaft'.
"Why the f**k would I send you a washing machine? I sell ANUS laptops!"

My dear old mum has recently got on the net (73 years old) and is so trusting of things sent to her.
I keep on and on and on and on telling her NEVER to send any details to ANYONE. If a bank or someone important want information they'll call her or write - but old people scare/ are fooled too easily.
Also trying to persuade her not to open any attachments unless she's 100% certain about who sent them. And certainly not to forward them to me!
It was the same when she got her mobile - if she ever missed a call and didn't recognise the number she wanted to call it back We came to blows over that one many times If it was important they would have left a message, or they'll call back - she just doesn't seem to get it.
I do worry about her though - is there a Net Nanny for grown ups?

Most money making scams prey on one thing we all suffer from..........greed!! The trick is to be not too greedy and to retain some common sense after all.....if it's too good to be true then it probably is!!!!!!

The cheque will bounce.
Not alot you can do.............
with personnal cheques the owner of the cheque get charged a fee for the cheque bouncing.
You get the bounced cheque back so you pay it in again...
it bounces they get charged the bank fee you get the cheque back and pay it in again
it bounces they get charged the bank fee you get the cheque back.....
repeat until tired of lining up at the bank
OK so its not the £3000
