Default Halfords :(

went to halfords yesterday as i'm off work for 2 weeks (holiday) and thought i'd sort myself out with a bike as i keep thinking of getting fit (well fitter).

don't want to spend much as i'll probably get bored within a week or so and looking at their bikes i saw a Diamondback with twist grips (think thats what they're known as?) and a disc front brake.
The bike was silver and black and that was the only 1 i wanted even though it was £160 (cheap to most people but more than i was looking to spend - if it lasted then fair enough)

i stood looking for 15 mins while the 2 muppets behind the counter tossed it off, i couldn't try the bike for size as it was in a rack so ended up walking out

i can't belive when there's 1 customer in a place and 2 staff they wont make any effort to be helpful - even a hello would have been nice

is there anywhere else in west yorkshire that stocks Diamondback bikes cheap? i tried the DB website but it's down

are Diamondback ok? i know many years ago the DB bmx bikes were 1 of the expensive ones

cheers

It's a bit "off the wall" , and you might not have thought about it but I usually find walking up to the assistant and saying:

"excuse me, I'm interested in buying this [insert product]"

- always works for me - maybe give it a try ???

i know what you're saying but i think if these people are too ignorant to talk to customers even though they are getting paid to they don't deserve commision if the customer has to buy the product - they should sell it

And yet a pushy salesman approaching me when I'm not ready is a sure fire way to see me walking out of the shop. I prefer to approach them when I am ready.

To add some balance, I went into Halfords recently to buy a bike for my 10 year old & the staff couldn't have been more helpful. Even when we picked the bike up & my daughter declared she didn't like the colour of the seat, the chap changed it for another one in a different colour on the spot. Great service.

for that sort of money drop the disc and get a better frame.

GT Avalanche 3.0 ( non disc ) for £199 here :

( not that it's particularly relevant to your rant )

I called it 'feature creep' when it happened to me

I claim extreme restraint kudos that I didn't get the hope 4pots at the same time

I hate pushy salesmen, I prefer to approach rather than be nagged. Can't believe you just walked out rather than asking!

I bought a mountain bike from Halfrauds 3 years ago (a Saracen thingummy for about £200) and the lad who served me was spot on .
Granted I had to approach him and tell him why I was there, but I couldnt fault the service.
I have moved on from £200 bikes since but if anyone I knew was going for an entry level bike I'd happily point them in that direction

Halfords guy put me off buying the bike I wanted for my wife! I was VERY pleased with the service provided.. I told him the list of requirements, what *I* thought was the right thing to go for and he very politely told me I was talking bollocks

He then explained in quick detail what I should be looking for, showed me a bike that almost fitted the requirements and suggested I go and look at some specialist shops to see a wider range! How good was that????

yeah to be fair theres little motivation in halfrauds do actuallydo anything. There are some bikes that arent actually too bad in halfrauds. I worked there for three years mainly in parts but for 6 months runnin a bike dept.

Worked in the bike dept for 5 years whilst at Uni, A-levels etc.
I think its a bit harsh to say Halfords is the prob, I'd imagine the case would have been the same with p/t staff in any retail style outlet where commission was not applicable.

I think if you go to a specialist shop you are more likely to get served by someone with an interest in what the are selling and thus will be more helpful.

Still think I would have asked too

GT is the better bet 2

I have always found Halford's staff to be extremely helpful in this part of the country.
