I thought these were just rubbish words to get around spam buster programmes. Often at bottom of main message and sometimes in virtually white lettering so you can't see them unless you look hard. But I may be talking bollox of course

Yup - but often they forget to white them out, or even include the intended content in the mail. I wonder how much SPAM is people testing bulk mailers out without knowing WTF they are doing.

they are validating your e-mail exists by sending you "non spammy" content it's less likely to get rejected. . . .

Fortunately the SPAM filters on my mail server are a little more sophisticated. Word checkeing is just one tool it uses combined with internet black list lookups, local black list look ups, HTML content etc etc to give an overall SPAM score for the mail. You can also add custom things to look for. On the whole it works very well, not had a SPAM mail slip though in a long time and it catches around 500 per day.
