Default Anyone know about large moths & butterflies?

Had a shock this morning when I went to the kitchen widnow and found this .
Its about 5" across and 3" long!

The cats had a go at it overnight but its still alive. It may have been pink but has faded a lot.
Is it from the UK? We've got some orchids growing on the windowsill - could it have been a pupae in the soil?

Looks like a "Death's Head Hawk moth"

Is there like a small skull shape on it's thorax? I can't tell from the photo?

They do live in the UK.

It looks like a Privet Hawk Moth to me. The caterpillars feed on Privet leaves, hence the name. They are fairly common in England and Wales.

Horrible nasty things, yuk yuk yuk.

I hate having to have the windows open in summer, all the bugs get in and I swear they follow me 'cos I'm so pale I look like the moon.

I found some piccies of what they are meant to look like and ours is a bit sad compared with one in good condition.
The cats must have been chasing it around all night and it looks a bit "moth eaten".
Its now been let loose for those worried about it.
