Default Ever thought your time might be up?

Driving wise.Thought I had had it the other day.Certainly has slowed me down.Amazing how calm you are at the time though when you do think 'I'm stuffed'.

Driving down dual carriageway overtaking some lorries.Turns out to be blooming loads of them all leaving a millimetre gap between each other.Dual carriageway suddenly comes to an end, traffic coming other way already has the keenies trying to overtake,me doing the wrong speed searching for the end of the lorry fest .

I just thought this is it Hair breadth sneak back in.Pulled over afterwards and just thought never ever again.Stoopid but very very sobering. And no,I am not a lunatic driver.Just one of those times where I did the wrong thing.

As someone once said, you don't gain much from overtaking anyway. My philosophy from now on

Years ago I was passing a tanker on a dual carriageway - about half way past when the tanker decides to pull into my lane .

Slammed on brakes and somehow didn't get hit at all - but certainly "Woke" me up.

Stupidest thing I've ever done behind the wheel was about 7-8 years ago. I was in Leeds on a training course when thick fog started rolling in on the Afternoon. I was meant to be going out for a game of pool with my mates that night in Yarm.
I left Leeds at 5pm and got stuck in all the traffic etc, made worse by the thick fog. Anyway, got on the A1 North and was getting p1ssed off that I wasn't going to get back in time to go home, shower, eat, then get out to meet my mates. It got to the 3 lane section of the A1 and I assumed that cos the fog was that thick, no one would be on the outside lane, so I moved onto the outside lane and floored it. Doing 110mph when I could just see about 10metres in front of me. Mad !!!
It only dorned on me later that night laid in bed just how stupid that was. If anyone had been on that outside lane, I'd have hit them soo hard that I/we probably would have died. Probably would have started a multiple pile-up too. I would never ever do that again.

On the bright side though, I did make it to the pub on time !!

Had a similar experience on an A road when I decided to overtake the lorry in front, only to find there were actually 3 of them sitting about 6 feet apart, heading towards a blind summit Had one of the work mates in the car, he was saying "Will we make it, will we make it!"

That was about 10 years ago and I still remember rising up out of my seat till my head touched the roof as the keek made its exit.

Jackknifed on the M6 in rush hour towing a stupidly loaded Boxster. Don't know how I (and the cars) got out unhurt

Hello

I was driving across the forest at a reasonable speed (within the law) when I hit a patch of oil on the road. I span the car twice, went up an embankment slid along and ended up with the car facing the wrong way. It was late at night, no other cars, I wasn't hurt, the car just had a scuffed bumper.

It was a sobering moment where I had absolutely no control of the car and made me realise how things 'just happen' and you don't really have that much say in your destiny (not always true as you can certainly limit the things you do)

Try overtaking a artic following a caravan and hitting the 0.5bar boost limit in 2nd gear, because you've held in that gear too long before flooring it.

Then come face to face with saxo boy trying a max speed run the other way, Arrrggh. Stupid crappy Imprezas

Such an easy thing to happen, bet most of us have had a scare like that.

I think you are right about overtaking these days, so much traffic about that you just don't gain a thing really, not worth the candle!

Last week. Approaching a right hand bend in a 40 limit, to meet 2x BMW M3s (new shape, one grey one silver) coming in the opposite direction racing each other. Both 4 up with asian lads (just an observation - nothing implied). Overtaking car didn't miss me by much, I'd guess they were both doing 100+ by the amount they were leaning and scrabbling for grip.

Also last week, turning right at a junction on a dual carriageway controlled by traffic lights at 1am. I wait at the lights until they go green, pull out and start turning across the other side of the dual carriageway (bushes in central reservation blocking view), as I pull across I spot an MGF (the convertible) out of the corner of my eye in the fast lane driving with headlights off. Hard to say how fast he was going but maybe 80+ (in a 40), i floored it as i'm already across both lanes and he passed behind me missing the back of my car by about a meter - didn't slow down, brake or stop, despite it being a red light. If he'd been in the LHS lane of his carriageway he'd have hit me side on. Total lunacy.

Got of lucky there then

One of my best mates when i was younger(not long ago) was ejected through the rear window, when the car aquaplained and hit an oncoming car .He was ejected as i say through the rear quarter, and another mate got flung out the rear winscreen and ended up 40ft up an embankment with serious injuries and the car was chopped clean in half, needless tho say the lad who went through the quarter never woke up again

Landed upside down with elton john playing on the radio and thinking **** yeah Im still alive(although the roof was touching my head) and managed to crawl out the one door with a gap left big enough to get out of.

Still ****s me up when I feel the judder of the abs through the break pedal

I had a car crash in november someone pulled out on me and i hit them doing 40 i was originally doing 60 in a 30 i know it wasnt clever of me, i remember breaking but they locked and i skidded into the car i closed my eyes and hoped i would survive the windscreen came through on me and got trapped by the steering wheel and had to be cut out. Im alot more of a careful driver now shame it took that to make me realise.

First day I met my (now) wife. Took me for a fast drive down the B4494 from Newbury to Wantage. On the way back she took a corner too fast, had lift off oversteer, slid sideways across the road into the bank on the other side. Rolled about 4 times end over end and side over side into a field in her Saxo, just missing some trees and fenceposts. Car was completely destroyed. Somehow we both walked away with just some broken glasses (her) and a bit of glass in my head. Ambulance and spinal board just in case though.

Drove home at about 3am the next morning feeling the luckiest person to have got through unscathed. Found the only way to deal with it was to drive the road again myself a week or so later just to get that corner out of my system. Having failed to kill me she thought she'd marry me instead...

Coming back from Camber in 2001. Came through Newenden and had just past the Hastings Road turnoff and we're heading up to Linkhill. It's a pretty straight bit of road with good visibility.
There's a slow moving lorry carrying hay bales, then an escort, then me. I'm hanging back so I can see round the lorry, which I can, and the road is clear. Still hanging back I indicate and move out to overtake the escort and the lorry.
As I start to accelerate the escort moves over the white line, so I drop back and pull in, thinking he's going to overtake. He does not. I wait 10 seconds, indicate, pull out again, still nothing coming and go to overtake, As I get alongside the rear door of the escort they decide they want to overtake and pull out, I don't see the side indicator going.
Suffice to say they don't see me, I slam on the brakes and move the car to the right and end up on the grass verge, scraping along the hedge making a god awful sound.

Once stopped my first though it to maggie (the hound) whose in the back as she let out a loud yelp when I slammed the brakes on, and I assume she whacked into the dog guard. I'm worried she might be injured. I go to get out of the car and nearly fall down a four foot bank
If the hedge had not been there then I'm pretty sure the car would have been on it's side or it's roof.

Upside, hound was ok, if a little shakey. Downside, a fair bit of damage to the car (new front wing, drivers door, rear door, side skirts, and respray of the drivers side of the car).

To top it all, I managed to catch up with the scum in the escort, who claimed it was all my fault as I'm a boy racer, and deserved it. They proclaimed to know the lorry driver and would make sure this would get "sorted", and the slag told her chav to "get his number plate, we'll get his address from it". I refused to give my insurance details at that point and popped off to the cop shop, reported the incident, explained that I felt threatened and that is why I didn't give my details out. They understood.

A couple of days later, copper turns up at work, wants to have a chat, so we do, bottom line, no witnesses so I can't get the *******s done for anything. He agreed that they were not the most pleasant people in the world, however, he said if I wanted to persue this via the insurance company (I had told him I wasn't going to, premium would skyrocket), here's the scumbags address, nudge, nudge, wink, wink Never did do anything with the address though.

Had a few close ones flying at low level with near collisions etc, or just after takeoff once. Certainly concentrates the mind!

Good job you weren't dazed and wondering if you'd actually been killed as the first thing you'd have heard would have been Elton John and you would have therefore assumed that you'd arrived in Hell!!! A person never recovers from that kind of trauma!!!

Glad you were ok!!
