Default Car Tax Bulls**t!

Looking for any advice/ pointers!

My car tax is due up tomorrow so, as I have a new style MOT, I decided to do it on line last Friday. However, the DVLA site told me I didn't have insurance. I checked and I definitely do have insurance - but it's due to 'end' this week. It doesn't really end - the direct debit is all set up with the same company for next year and the insurance will just be reissued.

Spoke with the insurance company and they confirned that policy has been reissued and DVLA should now be able to pick it up. Problem is if I now do it on DVLA website the tax disc won't be with me for another 5 days and they told me in no uncertain terms that I couldn't drive the car until the disc arrived (makes a bit of a mockery of the computer mentioned in the adverts!)

So - plan B - go to the post office. Great idea BUT I need a copy of the insuance policy as the post office won't tax the car if the policy only has a couple of days on it. The policy documents are now in the post but haven't arrived yet and the insurance company are refusing point blank to fax a copy over.

So I'm open to ideas. I need to tax my car by close of play tomorrow. I've been trying to do it since last Friday. I'm willing and able to pay and really don't want an £80 penalty notice.

The only idea I have is to take time off work, keep the car on the drive and declare it as off the road - but it's p1ssing me off to take holiday because their bloody system doesn't work!

Does anyone have any sensible suggestions......?

Not much use for your current situation, but...

I would only renew the road tax for 6 months. From then on renew annually. This means the situation you're in doesn't ever happen.

Don't the Police still give drivers 2 weeks amnesty for road tax these days?

Jerome - that's my plan - as soon as I manage to tax the damned thing it will only be for 6 months!

I just don't get why they keep promoting the fact that "It doesn't matter where you keep the car - it's the computer you need to worry about". I'll be up to date on the fecking computer but still not able to go out because of a piece of bloody paper!

If the police run a licence/ reg check would it not show up as being taxed....?

Unclebuck - I would emigrate - but pslewis keeps persuading me not to by telling us how fabulous it all really is here...

They should issue the disc provided your insurance is valid on the day the tax disc is due to come into force.

If you do decide to try and stagger your insurance and tax renewal dates - which is a really good idea - it's cheaper to buy a 12 month disc and then return it a couple of days before the end of a month for a refund, than it is to buy a 6 month disc. You get a pro-rata refund, rather than paying the 'handling charge' for a 6 month disc.

Risking an £80 fine for something beyond my control is a pretty big deal for me - £80 is a lot of money!

Nope - they refused! And I really like your idea about the pro rata refund....

My insurance broker has managed to put the wrong vehicle registration on a certificate for the second year running. Becuase of this it was a pain in the **** to get Tax by the time I had the right insurance certificates I had lost the MOT now I have lost the MOT and the Log book for the bike. I really can't ne arsed any more so I will see how long it takes me to get fined for not haveing tax. My best guess is three months.

like he said, no big deal. I have forgotten about mine before and let it lapse over a week or so.
all you need to prove is that you have the paperwork(well most of it), the means to pay and more importantly the puter has you on file as up to date. so even if u were pulled over or clocked by one of the tax vans, then you could refute the fine.
I doubt it you will have any problem, so dont worry yourself and chill out. remember at least you are trying to get it taxed and are not one of the thousands out there diging road tax..

easy man

Sorn it LOL

Hactually, I've come a cropper - a bike I've owned and has been off the road over the last two year has never been sorned, only realised last week whilst sifting through paperwork to Sorn another bike. - doh!

Did teh honourable deed and sorned it on-line and was told I'd get a "you naughty boy, pay a fine and + back tax" Should be interesting, the bike is a 1962 Dominator..tax is £0 So that's two year's back tax @ £0..hmmmm , wonder what the admin fine is?

i can feel my blood pressure exploding again.

Ins still not arrived so cant do it. Phoned dvsh1ta they can do it but as it takes 5 days you cant drive it.
so even though you have valid ins, valid mot, valid tax, it is illegal to drive it because you dont physically have the up-to-date bit of paper in your window.
If the police stop you, they can radio in & immediately see you have valid ins, valid mot, valid tax, but because you physically dont have the bit of paper in the window youll get busted. how ******* stupid is that. Super computer my ******* ****
