Things to do in Madrid?
I'm on a conference in Madrid in June. My days will be work, but will have the evenings to myself. Any ideas?
ps I'm on my own so no romantic type things!

Hi
Take a trip to Plaza Mayor - spelling may be wrong!
Basically a big square - surrounded by restaurants & bars - the best one being a bull fighters bar - where the bull wins!
Loads of photos and videos running where the Matador gets trampled, gored etc. by the bull - makes great viewing!
Cheers!

Well, you did respond to my safari thread and as I've just got back from Madrid, I'd better reply.....
Plaza Major is excellent, very busy, I'll second the bullfighting bar.
Oldest Restaurant in the world (Botin?) is only just off it...better book though. Retiro Park is a great place in good weather (although not sure if you'll be there at the weekend when it comes alive with street performers and families). If it's your bag, and you've got the time, try the Prado Museum (lots of old stuff), or, my favourite, was the Reine Sofia Gallery - more contemporary, a couple of fabulous Dalis in there.
El Rastro open air market (Sunday morning) is so big it is mind blowing...I have never seen so much tat in my life...worth a look if you can stand the crowds
Metro is clean...modern...stupidly cheap, and not too busy, even in rush hour...
Everyone tends to eat late - there are great places to eat everywhere- and remarkably reasonable for a major European capitol. If you get to eat at lunchtime go for a Menu Del Dia...every restaurant/ cafe does them, and great value, with some excellent local specialities.
Oh, and if you're on your own, those Madridian girls are loooverly
It really is a great city...have a good trip
