40kgs per arm?? **** me when I used to go to the gym with a good friend we used to start on 20kgs per arm and finish around 25kgs and he would go up to 30kgs but he's huge and been doing weights for 15 years!!

I would say smaller weights for longer sets.

4 stone is a HUGE amount of extra weight considering you want to weigh just 12.

forget the weights (40kg dumbells????? ) and stop eating so much and keep on the running.

Those dumbells will just make you look like a fat bloke with strong arms, hardly a nice image on a summers day! Worry about the weights once your body fat is down.

With that sort of weight, you'll be gaining in bulk, rather than trimming down.

The easiest way to lose weight is use more calories than you intake.

Simple.

The rest of it will just make you fitter - which in my case isn't a bad thing, as I've already got the bulk, but I could do with losing a few pounds adn gaining a cardio workout

use your labs to bench press, at least if you start to struggle and drop them, it'll be softer than dropping weights on your face

oh yeah, tips that worked for me, stay on the treadmill for longer than you want, when you start reaching for the button to slow yourself down, make yourself keep from pressing the button, it's surprising how easy it is to do 10k the first time you do it.

The simple equation is burn more calories than you consume, and consume "good" calories.

Eat 5 times a day, avoiding single large meals, as traditionally you eat when you're hungry, but hunger causes the body to store fat reserves (it goes into a survival mode), whereas eating 5 times a day means your metabolisim remains high, and your body doesnt feel the need to store fat reserves.
You need fats in your diet, but the best ones are from things like fish and nuts.
You'll also burn more calories maintaining a higher metabolism.

Excercise needs to be regular, and aerobic if you're looking to lose weight.
Any weights you want to do should be high rep, low weight, unless you want to build? If you plan to build muscle, you need low(er) reps, heavy weights (but remember that muscle weighs more than fat, so if weight loss is the goal, dont build muscle)

Try and excercise each day, but target different areas on consequent days, so dont run Monday, cycle Tuesday, rather run Monday, target upper body Tuesday, cycle Wednesday, so you give the relevent muscle groups time to recover (otherwise they fatigue)
Saying that, something that works you all over like a cross trainer could be done every day, as its low impact, and works lower and upper body.

The essential part of all of this is eat well, regullaly, and excercise hard at least three times a week.
Cutting out things like cans of fizzy drink, and cutting down on take aways, can give really good, fast results (if you have lots of either).

There are calorie calculators on the net that can help you determine how many calories you want to be consuming to lose weight, and that'll help you keep track of your daily intake.

Good luck with it, might be worth joining a gym, as you have a range of excellent machines, and can better target specific areas, and also keeps you motivated (if for no other reason that they cost lots!!).
Stick with it, and be interesting to hear how you get on.

Lifting up your 45 kg dogs with one arm is one thing

doing 3 x 10 arm curls/chest presses or whatever with dumbells is quite another!

I'm a pretty strong guy and i use about 15kg's, if i see someone using anything over 20kgs they are normally the size of a house!

Sounds like your in a simular situation to me, i want to lose bulk/fat for the summer and get a bit of definition.

loads of c.v work and a good diet would be by far the most important things in my humble opinion....

Yeah, ive not come accross 80kg dumbells, usually top out about 40kg's, and 40kg's in each hand doing something like dumbell presses is certainly possible, and very impressive, but not curls or anything.

Cardio first thing in the morning burns more fat, so if you can do it, its certainly worthwhile getting your excercise in early.

I can bench over 200kgs - 40kg is only one plate each side, if the bar's not bending, you aren't trying hard enough

You've also got to add in the weight of the bar, 20kg's for an olympic bar, so you're actually doing 60kg's (depending on the bar).

I only bench press once a week, and can only press a puny 55kg's, havent done bench press long, so looking to increase quickly.

Over 200 is hard core, there's a bloke at work thats done 205kg's, scary stuff.

I would have thought picking up your two dogs ie, 1 in each arm would be far harder than picking up a 2 purpose built dumbells of 40kg each.

When you say, 'so i can probably take around 40kg each arm,' do you mean just lifting the weight of the floor like picking up two tool boxes at your sides or actually curling the weight as in a bicep curl?

I weigh 82kgs and I can curl 20+kg no problem (6- 8 slow reps with good form) and I so do not look strong at all.

I weigh 82kgs and can bench press between 80-100kgs.
I most certainly would bend and snap before the bar ever would!

You'd be surprised at how small some people are that can bench 200kgs

This guy is small and has 6x25kg, 2x15kg and a 20kg bar - 200kgs

Im not small in terms of height but when you compare me to a racing snake im a bit on the slim side maybe even a bit gangly! not suited to the old bench press at all.
