Just How good is Fruit for you.?
I have started a Gym and have decided to make a few changes in my eating habite too.
i.e for lunch in work instead of the usual takeaway crap, i have started buying fruit, but to feel full i tend to eat quite a lot of it
I could quite easily substitute meals for fruit, but would it do me any good if i end up eating lots more but just better food
I have also stopped smoking so this is prob why i keep picking up apples/bananas etc instead of a ciggy

Fruit is good for you, but be aware that it can be high in natural sugar content.
So if your on a diet and trying to control intake of calories to lose weight...eating loads of fruit instead won't help with weight loss. It's doesn't matter what type of food it is, if you eat too much you can still remain tubby
Also be aware of acidity of certain fruits - especially if your prone to acid indigestion (or is that just me? )

I don't think you want to be substituting meals for fruit mate - look at it more as substituting it for snacks i.e. replace crisps, chocolate, biscuits etc with fruit.
You still need to eat meals, but you can eat healthy meals too. Plenty of brown rice, (skinless) chicken, tuna, pasta, jacket pots etc.
There's loads of threads on here about the right training diets for your needs - bulking up, trimming fat, general fitness etc.

The "meal" which i mentioned substituting is "lunch" which is mostly made up of sncks really, the place i work for is terrible for cakes biccies etc. Failing that someone does a bakers run and gets the bacon sausage sarnies in.
I am putting a lot of the fruit eating down to VERY recently giving up smoking.

Good luck with it.....at least you are not stuffing your face with chocolate...the food cravings will die down after a while.

At uni i recently started eating fruit and nuts etc instead of chocolate as it was cheaper and left you feeling less drained half an houra fetr you've eaten it. i feel much more full of energy now and just generally better. Going to the gym and that will make a big difference I imagine.

Do a search on the net for GI diets. it's just a really sensible eating plan and not one of these fad diets. I went from 12 stone 8 to 10 stone 10 in about 6 months, without really cutting down what I eat. You just eat better and group certain foods together. it's easy!

Some fruits do have a fair amount of Natural Sugars in but to get fat from fruit you'd have to eat a h3ll of alot!
An average apple has something like 50-60 cal's, so to exeed your 2500 allowance you'd have to eat almost 50 of em!

Dont listen to the "natural sugar" rubbish, fruit is very good for you, as wez says you'd have to eat **** loads for it to make a difference.
I started my health kick in Jan, 3-4 gym trips a week plus substituting snacks with fruit - i tend to eat 2 apples, 2 bananas, 3 satsumas, kiwi, and a pear every day after lunch.
So far, I feel much better, and have lost a stone in weight as well as gaining muscles I never had before.
At the gym I cycle 4km, row 2km, run 5km, and do another 5km on other machines on each trip.
I eat a healthy balanced diet, but still have pub lunches once a month, and a few choccy snacks on a weekend

Try and eat all your fruit in the morning - for breakfast and lunch.
It is easier for the body to digest fruit in the first half of the day.
Also - acid fruits actually alkilise the body - ultimately reducing acidity. If you suffer heartburn it is likely to be a high sugar, high fat diet that is increasing your acidity levels. Fruit on top of that could be negative.
However take the crap out of your diet and you will get a great balance.
My recommendation would be fruit for breakfast and then advocado (actually a fruit) or lightly steam broccoli for lunch with some salad and nuts.
A great resource is the Ultimate Nutrition Bible by Patrick Holford - (I think the names are correct)

Was getting worried when I read the natural sugar thing.
Since January I have been having a banana,an apple and three satsumas for breakfast instead of my favourite two rounds of toast and peanut butter.
Pleased to see there is nothing to worry about on the 'fruit makes you fat ' front
